Star Wars: Battlefront Commercial Aims For the Feels, Scores a Direct Hit

Sony has released a new, nostalgia-fueled commercial for its Star Wars: Battlefront PS4 bundle.

While Star Wars fans come in all shapes, sizes, colors and genders, one common experience many share is falling in love with the franchise as a child. Whether they spent their days re-enacting the films or exploring new adventures with toys and games, there's no lack for people whose formative years were defined by their love of the Force. Understanding this, Sony, in cooperation with the game's developers at DICE and Electronic Arts, has recently released a nostalgia-laced commercial for its upcoming <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/star%20wars%20battlefront?os=star+wars+battlefront>Star Wars: Battlefront PS4 bundle.

Opening to the tune of classic Star Wars soundtrack music, the commercial begins with a man working late in an office. Looking tired and somewhat less than pleased with his life, he picks up a well-worn R2-D2 toy from a spot on his desk and smiles. The next fifteen seconds follow him flashing back to varying points of his childhood where and he and his best friend spent their days geeking out over Star Wars. Hopping back to the present, the room starts to rumble and the triumphant music of A New Hope's <a href=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yixG8pfncOs>award ceremony starts to play. An X-Wing, piloted by the adult version of his friend appears. Alongside it is a second fighter with an empty cockpit. Shattering the window with his desk chair, Mr. Nostalgia (not his official name) leaps into the second X-Wing and the two blast off for more adventures in a galaxy far, far away.

Following Star Wars: Battlefront's a tad unbalanced, made me feel little a kid again. This commercial, created for the holiday season, strikes on that particular nerve perfectly.

That is a great commercial, reminds me of Dead Island actually. Give that advertising team a bonus.

You know what would make a better ad? Actual gameplay being shown. Remember those type of ads? But you can't really do that because the moment you do most of those watching will realize "wait, outside of the fancy graphics I'm better off buying the Battlefront games from a decade ago".

That didn't really hit a feel for me.

In saying so however I did notice that scene of the side angle of the X Wings and that pliot cheering strike a strong resemblance to that new X Wong scene in the A Force Awaken trailer.

Tonight, on the news at ten: John Doe, a data entry clerk, husband of Jane and father of two, died today after leaping out his office window, friends and coworkers are dumbfounded as to why he did it.

I'm pretty meh about it, but the suggested/related videos had a trailer for Home Free. That looks interesting.

Oh, look. An ad for an ad for a game that is a reboot of a sequel to another game about a trilogy of movies from the 70's and 80's. No wonder it leaned so heavily on nostalgia.

I'm sure young adult white male white collar urbanites will be jumping out of their high rise office windows over this one to relive their glorious childhood memories immersed in cultural consumerism.

See I can suspend my disbelief. A millenial with a job?!
I mean boom! Talk about ludonarrative dissonance!
Haha, that's what I was thinking too. The part where he's in a super nice office having what appears to be a decently paying job already seems like wish fulfillment, and then he gets to fly an X-wing?

So rather than appeal to us with great new features and gameplay, they try to appeal to us emotionally by reminding us of the good parts of the franchise? Nice, EA.

Oh, I liked that.
I usually don't like talking like this because I feel like it's done by people who want to look impressive by totally missing the point, but he's jumping out of a building and I'm thinkin' "Is he crazy?!"
Then I thought if I was in a high rise and an X-Wing showed up outside with my name on it, I'd probably jump too.

This seems to be a popular trend with video game ads; having regular people shooting at each other or acting out scenes of the game in real life areas. They did it with various CoD games, and it was just as cringe worthy then. I'm not really all that familiar with older video game ads, but was this always so popular? It seems like -- hang on! Wait just one second ... did I just read an article about a fucking ad? Jesus Christ, why is this site literally advertising an ad? I know this site often has low content articles, but I don't see how this can even be rationalised as having any form of value.
What's more, adding in a section at the bottom effectively handwaving the lengthy list of concerns people have with this game... wow. This really is just a blatant ad for Battlefront, Sony and EA.
