Chewbacca Arrested While Campaigning For Darth Vader

That's not a moon, that's a polling station.

It's been an fascinating year for election news worldwide - Justin Trudeau just became Canada's Prime Minister while Donald Trump is predicted to win the Republican primary. But the strangest election update actually comes from Ukraine, where <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/star%20wars?os=star+wars>Star Wars' Chewbacca was just arrested for driving <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/darth%20vader?os=darth+vader>mayoral candidate Darth Vader to a polling station. And let me tell you, it's not easy to arrest a Wookie, requiring four officers to wrestle him into a police van and escort him to a court hearing.

No, I'm not making any of this up.

Darth Vader represents the Internet Party of Odessa, Ukraine, where he legally changed his name to reflect a geek-friendly platform. But when Vader was taken to the polling station by a Chewie-costume wearing driver, they may have breached Ukrainian law - specifically one stating that candidates may not canvass on an election day. When "Chewbacca" refused to present documentation to police, he was arrested on the spot. Did nobody remember that you're supposed to let the Wookie win?

Chewie was taken to court - where he appeared in-costume - and fined an amount equivalent to £5. Yet Chewie refused to pay, stating "Huuguughghg huurh huurh hnnnhrrhhh uughguughhhghghghhhgh wrrhw aguhwwgggghhh aarrragghuuhw aarrragghuuhw huuguughghg huuguughghg uggguh huuguughghg." (Roughly translated as "[Chewie's] funds are in an intergalactic bank that has no branches on this planet.")

But what about the election itself, you ask? As Master Yoda said, the Dark Side of the Force is not stronger than Light. Darth Vader was allegedly prevented from voting because his name wasn't on the electoral list. Imagine that - the second-in-command of a galactic dictatorship felled by democratic bureaucracy. There's a lesson somewhere in there.

The final results will be counted by Nov. 4, so perhaps this Sith will have his revenge. In the meantime, I don't want to be around when Chewie tells Han who he voted for this year.

Sometimes, fanatics can be fun.

The thing that really caught my interest was the amount the fine was. I didn't think you could get a fine that low(Granted, I don't know much about fines to begin with, I just assumed they started at something around $50).

On a side note, it's very annoying to correct my mistakes or make changes when typing when the new picture viewer takes control over the left and right arrow keys.

I've only two things to relate to this... First is that part of me wants to classify this as satire, but its not and I have no other place to put it as far as classifications go.

Second, Chewie looks like he's coming off a bad meth bender... Or did he get hooked on Death Sticks?

Ok, sometimes reality can get really weird sometimes.

And what happened to Chewie? He looks like he got hit by a Star Destroyer.

This reminds of the time Darth Vader robbed a bank

Although that turned out a lot more sour for the Dark Lord.

See I was thinkin' the same thing but I was afraid to say it lest I look like an idiot.
On one hand, they *did* arrest ol' Chewie and take him to court, you can even see him actively resisting arrest (I don't know how that works in the Ukraine but I imagine that "resisting arrest" is pretty universal, correct me if I'm wrong) .
On the other, they fined him for barely anything and let him appear in costume on trial.

I sense a disturbance in the Force...

Wow, there's something I never thought I'd see. Also, why would Chewbacca be voting for Darth Vader? It just doesn't make sense!

Given that the average monthly wage in Ukraine is about 155 dollars, it's not that small.

OT: That picture in the courtroom. Magic.

In Australia, not voting (or more accurately, not going and getting your name marked off for getting ballot papers) carries a $20 fine.

It gets even better, the Emperor Palpatine actually won a seat on Odessa council with 54.5% of the vote.

considering the exchange rate of Hryvnia (Ukraine's currency) to USD is around 23 dollars per Hryvnia dollar this guy probably will be eating pretty light for the next few nights.
