Also, I'm pretty sure the hostage WOULD be dead if you waited a month, since the settlement quests can be failed by taking too long (Though it is pretty generous with the time, unless it's a "defend this settlement" quest).

Not to ruin the joke but, err, hostage quests can be failed if you take too long. You only get a couple of days, last time I fucked one up checked.
