Gearbox Opens New Studio in Quebec

Despite closing studios in Australia and China, Gearbox has now opened up a new studio in Quebec.

Gearbox Software [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/gearbox+software], the folks behind the Borderlands franchise has just opened up a new studio in Quebec, Canada. It's currently hiring 16 new positions for "its inaugural title growing to full AAA production capability through 2016."

"We now look ahead to another key and exciting step which is our commitment towards our all-new Gearbox Studio Quebec where we strive to team up with some incredible talent in the world of video game development outside of Texas to help us build fun and exciting video games within our tent-pole brands," said Gearbox president Randy Pitchford.

This is certainly some great news for Gearbox and parent company 2K, which recently shuttered studios in both Australia [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/161374-Borderlands-Online-Cancelled].

The new studio will be co-headed by creative director Pierre-Andre Dery and director of operations Sebastien Caisse. "Thanks to Randy and his gifted team in Texas, we are designing a truly unique studio from the ground up in order to enhance Gearbox's ability to entertain the world with best-selling, larger than life experiences," said Caisse. "To be able work for such a storied independent game studio as Gearbox is a great honour."

Dem tax breaks.

No, seriously Quebec has some pretty attractive tax breaks for gaming publishers. That's now Gearbox, Bethesda, and Ubisoft with Montreal studios.

Meanwhile Ontario and the Federal gave over $7 million in tax dollars to Silicon Knights over a few years..... Post Eternal Darkness and Twin Snakes.....

Soon now, it's only a matter of time before EA and Activision move a major studio to Montreal, and when that happens we shall control the gaming industry once and for all!

But seriously though, two publishers coming here in one week? Wow, must be moving season.

Wouldn't rule that out.

Eidos Montreal is there too so by extension Square Enix is in the area

I'm actually surprised they aren't there already if I'm being honest. At least EA, given how greedy they are.

Moving requires money, and opening a new branch would require hiring new people (and it's been many years since they opened a studio that wasn't effectively reshuffling a pre-existent one they closed). On top of that Montreal only has about a 20% Anglo population, with most of the Anglos on-island living in cities not part of the city itself on the West Island, so some of the laws and realities about language may also be a factor as well.

But it's only a matter of time, soon all will have a studio here, and we shall rule the industry.

From the studio that brought us Aliens: Colonial Marines and Duke Nuke'em Forever!

Ah well... I guess if Iceland's principal export is pretend spaceships, then Canada's can be fake worlds.

Rest assured, Randy Pitchford has already hyped the studio to the moon and back, promising things it can't possibly live up to.

Oh wait, Randy actually said that in the article...oh whatever, the joke still stands!

Actually, it's a Quebec City studio. So, that's Gearbox, Ubisoft and Beenox (they count for something, I guess).

and we have two ubisoft studio now, one in montreal and one in quebec city, and a special trainning at the National Theatre School, of movement capture acting.

It isn't Montreal, but BioWare are in Edmonton, Canada and EA owns BioWare.

Well, they say it's going to be a new studio. But they're going to sell you a building by touching up the footage to make it look like people work there in realtime, and they're going to wall off sections and then charge you for them, and then there's going to be all the additions. I mean, they'll sell you a building pass, but then only include a portion of the overall building in that pass.

It's also likely that the construction time on the building will take orders of magnitude longer than projected, and earlier portions of the project will look dated and possibly even in disrepair by the time they are ready to unveil the whole thing.

Um, congratulations to the new candidate for closure, I guess...?

You can make games in Quebec, or you can make games in Texas. But if you can't acknowledge that Duke Nukem Forever and Aliens: Colonial Marines were bad games, a change of venue isn't going to help you.
