Ah E3, or as I like to call it, the Lie-athalon. Seriously you'd get more reliable information out of a politician.
They can still conduct closed-door meetings with the retail purchasers who E3 is targeted at, and most importantly, they can open their doors to a select group of EA fans who come in predisposed to be excited about what they see.
This part in particular stands out for me. "select group of EA fans who come in predisposed to be excited about what they see."
Ie the kind of people who would cream their pants even if EA openly admitted to shoveling out garbage. ...which they are.

Over the past few years the number of companies saying "screw this, we're going to do our own thing" has gradually been increasing. If this trend holds, then by default E3 will fade into obscurity as it won't have any developers going to it.

One of the points of trade stand at E3 is the fact that E3 gets global media coverage. The costs outweigh the costs paying for the equivalent of the free media coverage. EA can run their own event nearby and still get the advantage of the free media because the press being in town anyway. If E3 closes then EA won't get the free media and the cost/benefit of EA running its own event becomes negative.

Yeah, and that's what's going to happen if more and more companies decide to go do their own thing. It'll reach a tipping point where there's more "leeches" than companies actually attending.

Oh no! How ever could we survive without one of the big 3 feeding us doctored "vertical slizes" and prettied up game footage that has nothing to do with the release version?

Oh well... as the article states E3 used to be THE gaming event of the year... not so much today anymore.

BTW has EA said anything about abandoning gamescon in germany too? After all gamescon isnt as big as E3 so you would think they would opt out there before E3

An event that exists solely as a bloated, over-excited marketing technique will never ever ever fade into obscurity because they just fuckin well won't let it. It is the precise goal of marketing to smother you with the existence of something whether you asked for it or not. It will just keep getting more money thrown at it each year in the knowledge that more money will come flying back from the ever-accepting, easily pleased prepubescents and plebians of this vastly populated world. Will this advertising company stop proudly and arrogantly shouting in public for once? Not. Fuckin'. Likely!

That's OK. EA is slowly on its way to going into obscurity. Ask the PC crowd.

And E3 never really meant anything to me anyways. More of a marketing hoedown, if anything. It's been nothing spectacular for several years now.

E3 is kinda cool in a "Hey, we're going to announce a mass of games within the next few days" kinda way, but anything solid, like gameplay, is usually mostly scripted setpieces that I couldn't care less about, or is just a flat out lie to make that game look a lot better than it actually is.
