Red Dead Redemption's Xbox One BC Release Was an "Error," Has Been Removed

Red Dead Redemption was "accidentally made available" on Xbox One via Backward Compatibility, and has now been removed.

January marked Red Dead Redemption became playable over the weekend [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/166022-Witcher-2-Headlines-Newest-Backward-Compatibility-List], some people weren't terribly surprised that it was not accompanied by an official announcement.

However, Microsoft has now stated that Red Dead Redemption, along with the other newly released games, were made available publicly "due to an error," and they have all since been removed.

"Microsoft tests all Xbox 360 games with our emulator to ensure a quality experience across a breadth of titles," Microsoft's Larry Hryb, aka "Major Nelson," wrote on Reddit [https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/44im2b/red_dead_redemption_up_on_bc_for_xbox_one_before/czrjm5g]. "Due to an error, some of the games currently in test were accidentally made available. We have since removed access to those games, and apologize for any confusion this may have caused. We will have more information on upcoming releases soon."

Or it hints that Xbox 360 backwards compatibility was built into the architecture in some way from the very beginning, potentially to sell you it (since Xbox 360 games are emulated, this would mean you would be buying the digital item dressed up as "a next-gen port"). This is what I feel is the case, since they're able to revoke the ability to emulate the game and also because of how convoluted the process was to run it.

Or it hints what you say- they're planning to release it at some point. I don't know, maybe I am being too conspiracy theoretical here, but it's odd that Rockstar never reached out about this and MS seems to be quick to kick out the fire this caused (RDR is one of the most requested games right now and it's odd that it was discovered by complete accident out in the wild).

Really? Most of the games run worse because the console wasnt supposed to emulate Xbox 360 games, how could they get around selling the games in a worse state? And even worse by calling it a next gen port? Next gen ports at least run better or look slightly better (in resolution and the rest of the basics). It really isnt the same thing at all

It wasnt like that, it was still in testing and someone made a mistake making it available through the common marketplace, it wasnt even the only game.

Not even. You had to know of a gamertag that was following that particular game and go to the store from that link. You couldn't search for it and popping the disc in did nothing.

I assumed it was something like this. Testing, etc.

The thing is, if you own the game already (disc or digital), there's no purchase necessary other than the Xbox One and capable Internet, which is assumed already.
If you own it digitally, it becomes available for download when it's released. If you own the disc, when you put it in and go to launch it, it will download the digital copy, but require the disc in to play.
