Saw Being Resurrected For an Eighth Chapter, Legacy

It looks like Lionsgate's cash cow is making a comeback, and yes, there will almost certainly be blood.

If the reviews for the first seven entries in the franchise are any indication, it would be safe to say that a Saw movie will probably never wind up on any film critic's "Best of" list. When it comes to box office returns, however, it would appear that James Wan & Co can do no wrong. On an average budget of around 10 million dollars and an average return of over $100 million, Saw has easily been one of Lionsgate Entertainment's most profitable franchises, and held dominion over October releases for years until Paranormal Activity came along.

Saw has been such a hit for Lionsgate, in fact, that even as they were ending the series with 2010's aptly-titled Saw 3D:The Final Chapter, there were already internal rumblings about a potential reboot of the 2004 modern horror classic that started it all. Those plans were eventually abandoned, and now, rumor has it that Saw will be returning in 2017...with another sequel titled Saw: Legacy.

After five years of pitches, and a re-release of the classic back in 2014, Lionsgate has decided to move forward with an eighth film in the franchise, according to a trustworthy tracking board.

James Wan, who has gone on to direct Insidious, The Conjuring, Dead Silence and Fast 7, will executive produce with Whannell.

For those hoping that Wan would finally be returning to the director's chair for the eighth entry, this news may come as an ugly bit of foreshadowing. As silly as it might be to discuss the narrative inconsistencies of a torture porn franchise, many of the troubles with the later Saw entries stemmed from the fact that the original visionary's touch was nowhere to be found on them. The six sequels the film has already received were split between three different directors and five writers, and were churned out at such a breakneck pace that it's easy to see why the franchise ended on such an unsatisfying note.

Of course, it doesn't help that Lionsgate has hired two new guys with a shaky-at-best record to write the screenplay.

Lionsgate has tapped duo Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger - the duo behind Sorority Row, Piranha 3D and Piranha 3DD - to pen Saw: Legacy, although there's no story details at this time.

So it looks like we can expect more of the same for Saw's eighth chapter...with maybe a couple pornstars and David Hasselhoff cameo in there somewhere? Fantastic.

As doomed as the film is, the fact that there's a movie out there called "Piranha 3DD" makes me even more upset.

Eh, normally I'm one of the first ones to start bitching about endless sequels/reboots/remakes/etc, but really there's not much harm that can be done by the Saw movies. They're kinda like the Final Destination movies in that no one sees them because they're interested in the plot, all they want to do is see the new and creative ways the writers have come up to horrifically kill people.

Gotta love our society, we're still no different than the Romans going to watch gladiators get slaughtered at the Colosseum. :3

I loved the first two movies, and actually like how the end of the last movie brought things full circle. But now, well, I guess circles are overrated, thanks to franchise potential.

Damn it.

And I'm sure they'll find a way to rope poor Tobin Bell back into this, though I confess, he was one of the few (if not only) saving graces of the later movies.

Disappointed to hear they're going through with the Pirahna film directors and not the 'alternative storyline' they'd been rumored to be considering, going down the grim-dark 'Se7en' route that originally was an inspiration for the film, maintaining a strong sense of realism in the story.

I never got the appeal of this series.

Most of the time, it just feels like they are just trying to create gorn and, while I know that killing is a major part of slasher movies, the sheer amount of detail they put into each character suffering is just hard to watch.
I remember the first time I saw this series, I was kinda young and it was the scene where the guy had to dig out out a key that was stuck in his eye or a bear trap would impale his head.
I'm not a stranger to gore, but FUCK ME that gave me nightmares for a while.

Well, crap, I'm gonna see this one, not because I want to (but I do want to a little), because I feel like I have to.
I liked the first three and the ending of 5 but everything besides those, I didn't love, and I straight hated 6 and 7.
But hey, I'm already in, might as well keep going.

To be fair, at least in the first two the violence was mostly fairly low key. Most of the stuff in the first one was either implied or you saw the aftermath and it didn't linger. The second was more violent but not nearly as hardcore as the later ones got. I could only watch the first two since after that it was just gore porn. They had good potential but milked it and lost any touch with quality, it's sad really.

never understood how these crappy movies made it that far up to 7. first one was sooooo boring, i hardly could keep my self up. part i was amazed about the stupidity and part 3....damn, i already forgot what that was all about, so as part 4,5, 6 and 7 was some showdown that somehow added up all of the previous movies.

cant they make a dredd 2 instead, now this is a good damn movie, which i would see in 3d.

*twitch* Realism. REALISM... I don't even. The amount of highly improbable psychological reactions in the films combined with cancer asshole's general omniscience and omnipotence makes those films about as realistic as Naruto.

The very thing you complain about what was unrealistic in the film is exactly the kind of stuff they were rumored to be attempting to change. Jigsaw was going to be more enigmatic, the 'traps' were going to be more believable and plausible within reality (Again, like a decent number of the first film's traps) and that overall, it was going for a 'let's actually place some limitations on ourselves, how the characters react, the capabilities of the antagonist and do something that actually feels like it could happen in reality.'

But again, these were just rumors based on what the directors and producers said they wanted to try.
