The Force Awakens Concept Art Shows What Could Have Been

Industrial Light & Magic has released a big dump of The Force Awakens concept art, showing some familiar scenes, and some cool ideas.

Industrial Light & Magic [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/star%20wars%20the%20force%20awakens?os=star+wars+the+force+awakens], has just released a big dump of concept art from the movie, showing both images that would be realized as scenes in the movie, as well as some ideas that didn't quite make the cut.

Check them out below (The Force Awakens spoilers may follow):

[gallery=5965]

In some of the stuff that was eventually scrapped, we see some concepts for both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker that are a bit different from how they finally appeared on screen. I quite liked bearded Solo - it makes him a look a lot older and more grizzled. We also see this bad-ass First Order castle base, which brings thoughts of Castle Wolfenstein to mind, along with double-seated X-wings and Tie Fighters with folding wings.

There's this concept of Kylo Ren's helmet that looks a lot more like Vader's old one, and what appears to be a young, male Jedi star.

Finally, we see some BB-8 concept that Neil Degrasse Tyson [http://www.techinsider.io/neil-degrasse-tyson-bb8-droid-science-2015-12] would have been a lot happier with.

What do you guys think? Would you have liked to see some of these concepts in the film, or did you think the way it turned out was perfect?

Some of these are gorgeous looking. Probably gonna save a few of the Falcon ones for my desktop wallpaper.

I especially like the one where Han is facing off against a droid of some kind, blasters drawn, like they're about to have a gun duel. Has a nice spaghetti western feel to it.

I can't help but laugh at the snowy doom fortress with lava flowing all over the place. As nice as the lighting looks, I can't help but wonder how the snow persists next to what appears to be an active volcano.

If you ever see something in a piece of media and it doesn't make sense, a wizard did it. In this case, a space wizard.

OT: So, Kylo's helmet almost went full Mel Brooks? That would have been amusing. Also, is the only difference on the BB-8 that the ball bit is textured, or am I just not seeing it?

If they had kept Kylo wearing that Darth Vader helmet knock off, then it would had become too much (the whole thing with the film is just Episdoe 4).

Yeah, I cringed a bit when I saw that. The fact that they seemed to even be considering going that route ...
I know they could pass it off as being symbolic of his desire to live up to Darth Vader's legacy, but with everything else going on I really wouldn't be able to see it as anything other than cynical recycling.

Number 1 looks like something out of a KOTOR game. I wish I was this good at art. Been trying to draw for years and I can't seem to grasp it.

Most of these are just really cool artworks, even Luke with a man-bun... And then there's 10.

Was someone thinking that Vader helmet didn't look phallic enough?
And... Is that an alternative reality Darth Yoda under the A?

Sweet stuff.
I like the folding TIE fighter in particular. That seems so silly yet somehow sensible.

I loved the evil lava castle. The designers just going full on Fortress of Doom for that one, subtlety is not an option.

Also those helmets suck so bad. There is just no excuse.

No, that broad-saber still looks really fucking stupid.

Like all the detail but none of them really stand out to me. Except maybe the goofy looking helmets.

Can I have 2 on a poster please?

That shit looks so freakin' badass. Only shows how much Han Solo deserves his Sergio Leone-esque space-western.

His head's chunkier and has more technical looking panels. Also the eye is different.

Yeah, that was the one I thought 'they should have done that'. It makes more sense to me then them landing on their wings, they don't look like they could support the weight of the cockpit in gravity without doing damage.
