Search For Young Han Solo Actor For Star Wars Spin-off Narrows to Short List

Han Solo may be gone, but not forgotten, as Disney has apparently narrowed the field of actors to play the flamboyant smuggler in a Star Wars prequel origin story.

Disney has been hunting [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/165816-Disney-Lucasfilm-Already-Narrowing-Its-List-of-Potential-Actors-For-Han-Solo] for the next Han Solo - or a young Han Solo - to star in a Star Wars spin-off film about the dashing smuggler. And it appears that the list has been narrowed.

According to sources speaking to the Hollywood Reporter [http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/disneys-young-han-solo-search-875784], Alden Ehrenreich(Hail, Caesar!), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction, and Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service and Eddie the Eagle) have made the cut for the film, which has yet to begin shooting. The three were supposedly in London for costume or screen tests, but Disney is not talking. There could be other finalists - Emory Cohen (Brooklyn) also tested - but secrecy is high on the project.

The film is scheduled for a May 2018 release, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller at the helm. The film is being written by The Empire Strikes Back scribe Lawrence Kasdan and his son, Jon.

I'm honestly not sure about any of these guys. Maybe it's just that Harrison Ford is so stuck in my mind as the right person, but I guess we can only pray that one of these actors can deliver a believable performance. Who would you choose?

Jack Reynor? Seriously?!

A. What, is Chris Pratt too busy?

And B...JACK REYNOR?! And he hasn't been cast as Jim Raynor in a Starcraft movie?!?

That's the million dollar question. Harrison Ford's performance has reached such an iconic status that anyone following in his footsteps will have his work cut out for him.

Sadly, except for Egerton, I barely know anything about these actors and whether or not they have the charisma and acting chops to play Solo. And honestly, I can't think of anyone else either. Maybe Chris Pratt, maybe. But he's a little older now than Ford was during the filming of A New Hope, so not realy suitable for a younger Solo.

I think Morgan Freeman or Samuel L Jackson would fit perfectly for this role.
Both would bring something different to the character...

Seeing as River Phoenix is dead, I would have gone with Scott Eastwood. Sure, he's older, but he could definitely pull it off.

Can't they just skip this stupid 'Young Han Solo' and 'Young Ben Kenobi' movies for the crap fanwank they are and concentrate on making new and original stories in the massive universe of Star Wars instead?

Lucas Arts had the right idea with Knights of the Old Republic, honestly Star Wars isnt just fucking Luke, Leia, Han and Chewy!

I think I'm going to be unhappy no matter who they choose. Frankly, I wish they'd just drop the prequel crap. They have this whole huge universe already established. They could do anything with it, and create any character they want - so why the hell do we need a young Han Solo? Is Han Solo really the only smuggler out there?

This reeks of laziness and shallow attempts at franchise milking. Regardless of who they cast, I'm going to pass on it.

But how are you supposed to sell as many coffee mugs and bed sheets if you make the film about new characters in a new setting, rather than plundering the same old marketable pool of pop-culture icons they been leeching for the past few decades?

Those Darth Vader head toasters won't sell themselves.

In all seriousness, I'd rather they didn't resort to this kind of shit. If I were a cynical arsehole, which I am, I'd say this will have an absolutely insipid level of fan-service and references.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic about it but...honestly, I think Chris Pratt would be a decent choice. He doesn't really look the part, but none of these guys do either, but I think he could at least act the part. Though I'm sure it will be written off as just Starlord in a vest but...there are worse results. Episode VII has set my expectations low though.

Chris Pratt! Please, God, Disney call him. None of these doofi are worthy of Solo and we ALREADY KNOW that Pratt can pull off that sort of role.

No to all of this.

No to those actors, no to this movie, and no to anything Han Solo.

<spoiler=Spoiler for Episode VII>HE'S FUCKING DEAD. NO ONE WANTS A MOVIE ABOUT A DEAD GUY. WHO IS DEAD.

Seriously, a Boba Fett movie, maybe. A Darth Vader movie, maybe. But recasting characters is a no go for me. It might be stupid and closeminded, but no.

Uh... Why not also let Ford be part of the young Solo selection process? I mean, I'm sure he'll be a great mentor on the ways of the smuggling...

Other than that, as long as they act like a Solo, then I will see them as a Solo... just like with that one LEGO Star Wars mini-series...

I do wonder why they didn't try to use Adam Driver.

He already looks a lot like Han.
Different hair cut, a little make up to cover the small discrepancies.

Perhaps it'd be confusing to people seeing him play two roles or perhaps it's a matter of scheduling given the speed they intend to put the movies out.

Well....um....all issues with quality of the prequels aside, they were movies about characters who were either almost ALL dead or definitely die at some point in episodes IV-VI, so this logic doesn't fly.

That said....I'd still prefer an original tale and new character, but I would also love to see them somehow pull off a new Han Solo, too.

I think its the confusion of him playing two roles. Plus.....hmmm...I barely bought him as Han's son. The idea of him as Han seems a bit far-fetched to me; he doesn't really look it (imo).

Except the Prequels didn't come out 3 years after Originals.

I suppose I phrased it wrongly, but you just don't make a movie about someone whose death was 1 of the 2 most significant things in Episode 7 just THREE years after. IMO, it cheapens his death and makes the recast even more obvious.

If it isn't evident, I was pretty pissed with his death :p
