Mafia III Gets Official Release Date, New Trailer

2K has announced the release date for Mafia 3, detailed the different editions and pre-order bonuses, and released a new trailer showing off the game.

2K announced today that Mafia III will hit stores on October 7, 2016. Set in 1960's New Orleans, the game casts you as Lincoln Clay, a mixed-race orphan and Vietnam War veteran. Clay sets out to get his revenge on the Italian mob after they attempt to kill him.

Anyone who pre-orders Mafia III will receive the "Family Kick-Back." This pack contains three vehicles and three weapons, which can be seen at the end of the new trailer that was released today.

2K will offer three versions of Mafia III. The Standard Edition, which will simply include the game. Next up is the Limited Deluxe edition, which will bundle in the Season Pass for $80. Finally, there's a $150 Limited Collector's edition, which will include a vinyl record of the game's soundtrack, an art book, and more content that will be announced later.

Mafia III will be available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 7.

I'm sorry, but can I fight in a bathhouse and then fight not one but TWO tigers? No? Then I'm gonna play Yakuza again.

Wait, when was this happening? First I've heard of it!

As far as the gameplay looks, it doesn't look like much that's new to the genre, but who knows, it could be interesting. I heard the first 2 were alright, Mafia 2 being a more prime example

First game was masterpiece. second game was so so. third game looks like they are turning into GTA clone but hopefully it will be good but they are going to RUIN it. shooting looks solid but didnot like cover system and open world approach.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Mafia 2 have open world elements as well? If so, do you mean expanding the elements into an actual full blown open world game? I heard Mafia 1 and 2 had great stories and such, so I can see how the pacing might get marred slightly with the open world style, like most stories do in those kinds of games (Example: THIS IS URGENT! I hear yelled at me. Gonna spend 5 in game days shooting birds. It'll still be there)

Yes, in fact it was very much an attempt to take the GTA model to tell the Mafia story. To be honest, this looks like the next logical progression. Their whole deal was to try and give you a whole city to run as a crime boss, and a story of your rise (and maybe fall) to drive the whole thing and make you care. If they can pull it off with GTA style gameplay, but on the necessarily smaller scale than GTAV, I think it could be great. It just needs to be a lot smaller than GTAV, and a lot denser.

It Definitely Looks better than any GTA but thats not hard to be better than most overrated franchise in history. will it come close to original Mafia?? thats the thing.

Mafia 2 had open-world elements and looked like that was the direction they were headed, but the world served merely as a mostly barren hub to get from mission to mission. You could probably get some fun out of robbing stores and stealing cars, but you'd have to try hard to get it to the same level as GTA or Saints Row. In general, though, Mafia 2 was a lot of wasted potential, likely from trying to do too much, realizing the project was overambitious, and reducing the content. The story itself felt like over half the content was cut at some point.

Needless to say, I'm keeping my expectations low for Mafia 3. It looks good, but so did Mafia 2.

I'll say what I said earlier. This looks like it may be a pre-order to me. Looks good, a realitivly non-used setting, a 'Nam vet (how often do we have those in games?), and more then likely a great selection of Jazz.

...A masterpiece? I think that's going to far. It really hasn't aged well the last time I tried booting it up.

I wonder how this game will deal with the main character being some sort of Mob boss.

It's getting a little annoying that when your character is supposedly the boss, your subordinates make you do everything.

Also, are you fucking kidding me? In a MAFIA game, you make the Tommy gun a pre-order exclusive? Go fuck yourselves.

I must admit admit that I fell this game when I saw an early trailer. Yep, it was all pre-rendered. Yep, it showed no gameplay whatsoever.

Didn't care.

Trailer contained "All Along the Watchtower" and "House of the Rising Sun". Basically, I was sold.

Even if the game is terrible, I can drive around and just listen to the music...

It has aged terribly, but so has its' main competitor GTA3. Mafia was one of the first games to really try a 3D open world approach and was one of the first games that really invested in its' story. It also featured both good vehicle physics and gunplay for its' time. So yeah, Mafia at release was a masterpiece, seeing as how it was one of the games that pushed the envelope both on open worlds and storytelling in games. That it is a mediocre game today doesn't change the impact it had 14 years ago.

I kinda feel like... for something to be a masterpiece it has to hold up with time. GTA3, though it's dated, is still very palatable.

Mafia... I mean I tried playing it a few months ago and yeeeeshhh... It's rough to look at, rough to play. I mean it did A LOT of cool things. I like the story takes place over years and cars slowly improve with time, but then there are mechanics like getting tickets for speeding. Plus the realistic graphics mean that it really doesn't look good now, also those smoke trails were as terrible back then as they are now.

I think Mafia 2 has a better case of being a master piece. They did a good job making that city feel alive, theres a really cool feeling when you first step off that bus. And the jail section alone should be praised because, think about it, it's an open world sandbox game, what better world to put a prison section in where all of the sudden the players movement and freedom are suspended and limited?

This is just my opinion, of course. Mafia 1 is definitely in the lower top 10, but I would have to put other sandboxes like say The Getaway before it.
