No Competitive Play Ranked Mode in the Overwatch Open Beta

When the Overwatch open beta kicks off later this week, you won't be able to try out the ranked Competitive Play mode. It's apparently being tweaked for addition to the game once it launches.

In a post on the Overwatch forums, Game Director Jeff Kaplan said, "We've been reading feedback from the community and taking it all to heart. As a result, we've temporarily disabled Competitive Play for Open Beta so that we can rework the system and make it better." Competitive Play will return "sometime after Overwatch launches" on May 24.

If you played the closed beta, you got a couple of weeks to try out Competitive Play, and that's what provided the feedback Kaplan references.

The early access beta is already underway for those who pre-ordered on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. If you pre-ordered before April 29, you should be playing right now. If not, you can jump when when the open beta kicks off on May 5.

This doesn't surprise me since they just released it during the last beta and said they were most likely going to make a lot of tweaks to it.

You might want to consider re-wording that title. When I first saw it I took it at face value, implying that there wouldn't be any PVP play (which would imply nothing but bot matches) for the Open Beta.

Just sliding the word "Ladder" in behind Competitive Play would do well to clear this up.

I second this I thought the same thing like WTF Blizzard the one reason I'm trying the Open Beta is to tryout the PVP.

Competitve play =/= PVP, as pointed out above. It just mean the matches won't be ranked.

Ranking is going to be the usual cluster**** of trying to compare team players vs solo players with a single rank (all the big games are deadly afraid of introducing pure solo/team queues). To me team based ladder/tournament is competitive, matched games are training at best and grinding at worst.

Valve doesn't make games anymore. They don't even make maps or hats anymore, they get users to do it for them. What might happen is that Valve will simply get modders to run TF2 for them in its entirety.
I do wonder what they're up to in Valve HQ, apart from making VR stuff and rolling around in pools of Steam Money.

Unreal 4 looks far better than Source 2, so god knows what they've been doing to develope Source 2 in such a way that it's already outclassed by a readily available engine.

Valve has just become a bank. They're not a developer anymore. I love Valve and I love Steam, but what is it they actually do now?

Given how completely stupid most of the complaints were about the new doom, I wouldn't be surprised if some people bitched that overwatch wasn't command and conquer.
