One of the things that I wasn't fond of in the first one was the suggestion that the Warrens put any real effort into trying to sort between hoax hauntings and "real" ones.
I managed to put the whole "true haunting" bollocks thing aside and enjoy the film for how well it was made so I'm sure I'll manage it this time too.

Huh, there make good ghosty films these days? I thought the tropes were getting so strong, the genre collapsed into itself creating a singularity of stagnation and stifled indifference. It's nice to know that there is hope yet, even if the source material rustles my ragged jimmies.
I thought the first was one of the best horror films I've seen in recent years. It was chilling, creepy and utterly disturbing while telling a great story. The cast and set were great and for me personally, I really like the Salem Witch Hunts setting to the paranormal aspect. I really liked the Warrens, I didn't realise that many critics didn't. I'm going to watch this film, it will make a change from the superhero stuff 
I'm gonna go see this one tonight - the first one's easily on my top five list of favourite horror movies and I love James Wan to pieces so I'm soooooo completely awesomely excited
I would say I didn't think Annabelle, the prequel, was particularly great. While I loved the idea of how Annabelle came to be possessed and utterly evil, I think the film was just a creepy doll film. It literally relied on the creepy doll for all of its...well, creepiness. Now while dolls in general are creepy and Annabelle exceptionally so (I mean seriously, who would even want an ordinary doll like that near them or their homes!?), it lacked everything that made The Conjuring so good (the Warrens also among them).
And then to make it worse, later on, the demon-thing appears and suddenly all the horror is gone. We just have a CGI crappy monster now, great job. Do people remember the scene with the two daughters trying to sleep in the first movie? With the covers getting pulled down, "Did you fart?" because of the smell, and peeking into the darkness behind the door? Holy shit, that scene was incredible. It was spine chilling, sublime and demonstrates just how damned well The Conjuring was done (found (some of) it here on youtube [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEw9RBXwgcA]). Annabelle was an interesting idea, badly (or perhaps lazily) realised.

So... Can I still see this without seeing the first movie? Or should I see the first movie first to, then, appreciate this movie more than just seeing this sequel first?

Of course, the clapping hands in the wardrobe. My biggest letdown was the first actual appearance on top of the wardrobe. That At some point the villain has to be made real. But, when that happened, all of my worst fears were allayed and a lesser fear was confirmed.

There's a couple of little call-backs to the first movie and one of the underlying plots was referenced in the first movie but they kind of explain it? That being said, you CAN see this one without seeing the first one - it's an independent story that can be followed on its own merits. However, I heavily recommend you see the first movie first simply because it's a damn good movie.FPLOON said:
