First-Person VR Lightsaber Battles Now Available in Trials on Tatooine on HTC Vive

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/1336/1336907.jpgThe first officially-sanctioned first-person VR lightsaber game is Trials on Tatooine, and it's free on HTC Vive.

Over the weekend, the Star Wars Celebration took place, and one of the games that was shown off there was Trials on Tatooine. Called a "Cinematic Virtual Reality Experiment," the game drops you onto Tatooine amidst an Imperial attack.

Luckily for you, R2D2 is there to hand you a lightsaber and point you at the assaulting Imperial troops. You'll fight wave after wave of enemies while the Millennium Falcon makes preparations to escape.

The game was developed by Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic, and can be had free of charge on the HTC Vive after launching today.

I remember having this Phantom Menace toy as a kid. It was one of Maul's drones that he released onto Tatooine, and it would shoot foam discs at you. Just blocking one of those disks felt amazing.

This is sort of the case where I see VR struggling. You have a hot IP pushing out, uhm, basically a dime-a-dozen shovelware WII game in star Wars paint. The visuals may be pretty, but the lightsaber motion looks awkward as heck in the bit of gameplay showed. Combined with an apparent absence of any other motion.

Granted, its a free demo/test concept, so maybe I'm expecting too much of a product from them. But for the first leap of Star Wars into VR, its a bit lack luster.

Without tactile feedback I don't see any of these types of games being a success. If you can't feel the clash of the blades then what is the point?

I've yet to find a VR game that managed to immerse me because of things like that. However I found myself sitting in a VR theatre watching a movie and really enjoying the experience, though I had to take a break halfway through because the weight of the headset was getting irritating.

For me I think the future of VR is in media consumption. Imagine a movie theatre experience where you can scan yourself in, so you can look around and see your friends in the seats next to you.
