Telltale's Batman Adventure Will Have... Multiplayer?

Telltale is looking to bring multiplayer into the equation for its games, starting with Batman.

Adventure games are usually, by their very nature, a singleplayer affair. While there is some strategy and lateral thinking involved, they are akin to a kind of playable "choose-your-own-adventure" book. Telltale [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/telltale%20games?os=%20telltale%20games], who revitalized the genre by game-ifying popular IPs like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, is now looking to innovate the genre by bringing multiplayer into the mix, starting with Batman.

The studio is implementing a new feature called "Crowd Play" that will allow family, friends and even large audiences to join in to help make those decisions with you.

"We wanted a better way to integrate that audience," Job Stauffer, head of creative communications at Telltale, told Shacknews [http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2016/07/25/no-mans-sky-will-not-require-playstation-plus.aspx] in relation to the growing group of players who crowd around a single screen and and make suggestions on what the player should do. "Now, from two to 2,000-plus people can help the player make decisions."

"We are now turning all of Telltale's games into a live interactive multiplayer experience," he added.

Starting with Batman on August 2, players will be able to start each playthrough of a Telltale game with the Crowd Play feature. Essentially, using the feature generates a URL which audience members can navigate to on their phones, in a somewhat similar manner to the Jackbox games [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/editorials/reviews/14805-The-Jackbox-Party-Pack-2-Review-PS4-Xbox-One-Party-Game].

Crowd players will be able to choose one of the four dialogue options, which will then be tallied live in the form of percentages on the player's screen, letting the player know immediately what everyone thinks should be done.

Seems like this is going to be a great feature for streamers and parties!

Calling that Multiplayer would be a bit of a stretch, as it doesn't really change the game - it's more of a poll that can be seen in-game about what should be done next. Still, it's different from doing it just on your own.

Aren't a lot of these decisions on a timer? Could be cool to see everyone's reactions under pressure.

What happens if there is a tie? If two people are playing and one decided that Bruce Wayne needs to tell his love interest he's Batman and the other decided to trow a batarang at her instead what happens then? Is it randomized? Bruce yells 'I'M BATMAN' as he throws a batarang at her? Third ending where it turns out she was the Joker in a Dress all along?

Your decisions don't change the game :)

It always interested me that at the end of The Walking Dead chapters, it gave a breakdown of how many people made specific decisions. Although, displaying them when you have the option to make them may influence your decision. Generally speaking, when I make choices in games that allow them, I like to make them according to what I think, not what others have.

I liked those statistics at the end of the game to see what other people did, but seeing it constantly? Anyway i would rather make my own desicions, i'm the one playing the game. If i were to follow other peoples opinions i might as well watch a walkthrough on youtube.

Eh, a feature I won't be using anytime soon. I'm sure it'll be great for streamers, and terrible for for people who hate spoilers. I almost feel like this feature is a mistake. It would be better if they just automatically tallied decisions other players made, you know rather than waiting for the end of the episode to tell you.

This was my exact thought when I saw this story. The Telltale games are all about the choices you make. If you aren't going to be the one making the choices, then why bother playing it yourself? Just go watch someone else's Let's Play.
