Sony Announces PlayStation 4 Pro

PlayStation Neo is no longer Neo - Sony officially announced PlayStation 4 Pro today.

Sony unveiled PlayStation 4 Pro during the company's PlayStation Meeting today. The PlayStation 4 Pro, previously codenamed "Neo, adds a faster processor, improved graphics, and 4K support, with a 1TB hard drive. As previously reported (via leaks and rumors), the new system will be available alongside the standard PlayStation 4, and new games will be playable on the older console.

According to Mark Cerny, chief architect for the PS4, the PS4 Pro is "not intended to blur the line between console generations," but will rather "take the PS4 to extraordinary new levels."

"Some developers are updating previously launched PS4 games to add PS4 Pro support, while other developers are building PS4 Pro support into upcoming releases," wrote Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, on the PlayStation Blog [http://blog.us.playstation.com/2016/09/07/playstation-meeting-2016-introducing-ps4-pro-and-the-slimmer-lighter-ps4/]. "At launch, you'll be able to download patches for games - such as Uncharted 4 - which are enhanced when playing on the new console. Future releases that will have PS4 Pro enhancements built-in include Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda and Days Gone."

House went on to state that "all PS4 systems are also ready to deliver on the promise of virtual reality with the upcoming launch of PlayStation VR."

The PlayStation 4 Pro will go on sale Nov. 10 for $399.99.

Currently watching the Sony event, nothing they said made the Pro look inviting. 30 FPS and no Blu-Ray support.

if I have a 1080p TV, am I really going to care that I don't have a PS4 pro? If the general performance is upgraded, then I'm going to feel a little stiffed that I invested early in the PS4, not knowing they were going to have a jump in hardware within the same generation.

What, you were expecting vaguely current hardware?

The entitlement! The Sheer brazen cheek of it!

On a more serious note, if the future of games consoles is to be watered down PCs marginally up-rated every three years then I am not surprised at all the doom saying surrounding the future of home consoles.

"Well, I'll ask heem, but I don't think he'll be very keen! You see, he's already got one!"

I already have a PS4 and I don't go hunting after slighly-better models like I'm on Top Gear to one-up my friends. I play games and watch movies. This is not a massive thingy of difference for me.

What? Can I at least trade in my inferior version for a...hang on, will I lose my access to the P.T. demo forever if I trade in my inferior version for at least a discount on this Neo-Pro? To be honest, the HHD space is pretty shite for the current model though. I'm forever rearranging and deleting games to make way for others or even patches. It's annoying that the actual limit seems to not have a set number, nor does any download tell you how much you may need to delete to continue to the download.

There should be no excuse why we have such pitiful hard drive sizes in these "new" consoles. With how big games are getting, 2TB should be the minimum.

Well if you consider paying that much extra to play a game thats likely to be capped at 30fps anyway to be worth it, then by all means i wont stop you.

There might be some judging but ill keep that to myself.

Will the HDD be replaceable like the PS3? will the connection be SATA3?
Will this cause disparity amongst the user base?
What are the full system specs?
Will we have to wait until after release to find out?

The common misconception people are having is that they're comparing the Pro and the Scorpio to PCs. This is NOT what console manufacturers are doing. What they're doing is the smartphone thing where you buy a new upgraded system every few years.

Will all games actually work for it or are we getting some Hyrule Warriors world where it "technically" works on the old hardware the same way that Big Rig Truckers [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMnMOEB1zmE] is "technically" a functioning video game?

well if it's still capped at 30 then there really is no point. I'm not going to get the benefits of HDR on my screen anyway. If it would increase the framerate maybe it'd be something worth investing in.Guess I won't have to think about getting one unless my PS4 blows up.

Layers equal power, evidently. Explains why ogres and onions are so god damn strong.

The price point isn't as bad as I thought it'd be. Granted, it doesn't seem worth upgrading unless you can trade in your old PS4. Is upgrading from 1080p to 4k really that important to anyone?

Still, they've kept the price point in a range where it's still worth buying if you can't afford a PC.

Aside from the substandard split screen (because let's face it, in this generation, we're lucky if we ever even get splitscreen), what was wrong with Hyrule Warriors?

In single player, on my Wii U, it ran at 1080p and a constant 60fps.

Or are you referring to the 3DS game? Which, I've never played or seen gameplay of, bar for character announcements.

I'm aware of this, but I think it's stupendously dumb.

Phones have got away with it because people more or less live with their phones, they're universal communication and organisation tools. They're also sold in packages that partially or totally mask the cost of each upgrade within the service subscription fees.

The console isn't essential to many people's lives, at best it's the under TV entertainment device, effectively an upgraded DVR. At worst it's a toy for occasional use and it's not a work tool. Plus you don't subscribe to a console you buy it outright, then you keep it for several years until the next one presents a major jump.

I think both Sony and Microsoft are over estimating the number of people willing to drop hundreds of dollars regularly on extremely marginal upgrades. VR won't be enough to drive sales either, since even with a console it will still be extremely expensive.

Question! I don't have to buy this Pro thing in order to use VR, right? Because I really want to play that X-Wing mission, but not enough to add another $300 on top of what I'll have to pay for the VR headset.
