Langdell Says Resignation Had IGDA's "Best Interests" at Heart

In a statement regarding his resignation from the International Game Developers Association, the controversial Tim Langdell maintained that the move was solely done to protect the IGDA and "not because I have done anything wrong."

Yesterday Tim Langdell, the CEO of EDGE Games, stepped down [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94329-Langdell-Resigns-From-IGDA-Board-of-Directors] from his position on the Board of Directors of the International Game Developers Association. Langdell has become the subject of quite the brouhaha in recent times, having been accused of using his trademark on the word "edge" for the decidedly shady purpose of forcing companies into licensing the word from him or facing the threat of legal action.

Langdell's prominent position on the IGDA prompted those who believed he was using said position for personal gain to call [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93641-IGDA-Members-Call-for-Edge-Langdells-Removal] for his disbarring, but Langdell has gone ahead and done it without them. Langdell claims, however, that his resignation has nothing to do with the allegedly questionable quality of his character and only serves to protect the IGDA.

"I make this decision not because I have done anything wrong -- on the contrary I am confident that all accusations against me were unfounded and purely intended to defame, and am confident that I have at all times acted in the best interest of the IGDA and its membership -- but because I must make this decision between concluding a process that will show I did no wrong, and having that process irreparably damage the IGDA, I cannot permit the latter to happen," he said in a statement.

A meeting [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93729-IGDA-Agrees-to-Langdell-Meeting] of the IGDA had been scheduled for October 3 to discuss the matter of Langdell's position on the Board. That meeting, obviously is no longer necessary, but Langdell believes that it wouldn't have done much good anyway. "There are some who will take my stepping down as an admission of wrongdoing, but they are the same people who if the October 3 Special Meeting had gone ahead resulting in my remaining on the board would have refused to accept that outcome," he said.

Langdell says that he will continue to remain an "active member" of the IGDA.

What a dick. He copyrights a common word, threatens legal action against people who try to use it, and say that all accusations against him were "unfounded and purely intended to defame"? Thank god he's off the board.

Mr Langdell continued to repeat his denials as he was dragged away under sedation. Psychiatrists believe he has lost full contact with reality and shall be kept away from media outlets until his sense of denial has passed.

He might not have done anything wrong according to the law, but I still view his lawsuits as unfair, immoral and very, very wrong.

He has the law on his side, sure. But there's no need for these (in my opinion) needless lawsuits.

It's much nicer to pretend its a choice isn't it? One for the "good" of the IGDA, whereas being told to step down is rather personally denigrating.

Leave yourself or we will force you out?

I doubt it's the last we've heard from him though.

" I have never been a quitter.

To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as a Board Member, I must put the interests of the IGDA first.

The IGDA needs a full-time President and a full-time Board, particularly at this time with problems we face at home and abroad. To continue to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication would almost totally absorb the time and attention of both the President and the Board in a period when our entire focus should be on the great issues of the industry both at home and abroad

Therefore, I shall resign my position as Board Member effective at noon tomorrow."
-Tim Langdell

After the speech he then boarded Marine One, gave a final salute to his constituents

And left as Tim Langdell, Private Citizen

Eh, he's probably not hardcore enough to be involved with real politics, so he got involved with games instead.

And nothing of value was lost.

Finally got around to saying that.

Riiight, this had nothing to do with all the frivolous lawsuits you file to extort money out of companies that can't afford to tell you to go screw yourself and ignore you, obviously!

Normally I'd fill this post with all kinds of hate against Langdell, but I have to be honest...

The worlds needs another Jack Thompson to laugh at after Jack Thompson fell off the radar.

I laugh at this...this is truely the outcome of a law and rights system that is based on "I have more and better lawyers then you so STFU!"
That´s why he didn´t step in against EA, bringing out "Mirrors Edge" without ever hearing of Langdell...
If he truely had the law on his side, he could have filed a successful lawsuit against them either.
He didn´t, and therefore lost all credibility, because his victims where helpless, poor indie developers.
