Kalypso Announces Dungeons 3 for Fall 2017

Kalypso Media is bringing the next installment in the Dungeons series to PC, PS4 and Xbox One later this year.

Back in 2011, Kalypso Media released Dungeons, a game that cast you as the evil ruler of an underground dungeon, and tasked you with luring in heroes and leading them to their demise. To do this, you built your dungeon, filled it with monsters, traps, and treasure, and even took on some heroes yourself. In 2015, the company released Dungeons 2, and and today, Kalypso Media announced that it will roll out Dungeons 3 this fall.

The newest title in the series is expanding on its predecessors with randomly generated levels, a 20-mission single-player campaign, and an all new addition: two-player co-op play. The new game will also feature a completely reworked overworld RTS mode.

This time around, you'll play as a new character: the dark elf priestess Thalya. As the chief lieutenant of the Dark lord, she'll take to the front lines to spearhead his campaign against the overworld.

The Dungeons games aren't exactly like Dungeon Keeper but you can definitely feel the influence of the classic game. The official description reads:

"Unleash your dark side by creating a unique underground dungeon from a huge array of rooms, traps and structures. Raise the most terrifying army the world has ever seen, by choosing from despicable creatures such as orcs, succubae, zombies and much, much more. Then, once you have built your forces, emerge from the darkness and guide your army to the light of the overworld, where you will corrupt the land and dispatch anything even vaguely heroic, cute or unicorn-shaped. And in a first for the Dungeons series, experience randomly generated levels, so that no two sessions are alike - never-ending fun for any evil conqueror!"

There's no set release date yet, but Kalypso Media did say that the game will release in Fall 2017 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

I imagine people who want a good Dungeon Keeper game will appreciate this, considering that EA is still sitting on that license.

Given how poor the first two games were (the second was at least a slight improvement), it's unlikely people who want a good game are going to care about this. People who wanted a good Dungeon Keeper game already have War for the Overworld, as well as Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2 which are available on GoG and work nicely on modern systems.

Having played both War for the Overworld and the Dungeons games, I can confidently say that both are worth your time in their own right. Of course, I was one of the few that enjoyed both of the Dungeons games, but I'm still not sure why. My best guess is that people were hoping for a Dungeon Keeper clone, and those games weren't that, although you can definitely see the inspirations.

Good news ! The 2nd was very good, funny and malfaisant. Who knows, maybe it will be a good spiritual heir.
