You Can Now Buy Games on Twitch

Five percent of sales will go to the streamers if they have opted into the program.

Twitch has announced [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/169644-Twitch-Partners-with-Devs-to-Sell-Games-Directly-on-Site], starting with about 50 different titles. More games will be added in the future, with the option to purchase either the full game or in-game content directly through Twitch.

While the offer for any available game will be featured on all streamer pages when that game is being played, only partnered streamers will be able to receive a 5% cut.

The games can be downloaded and played via the Twitch launcher or on the publisher's service, like Uplay, and any game purchased for more than $4.99 will also come with a digital loot box, called a Twitch Crate, "which includes randomly generated rewards like emotes, badges, and Bits for Cheering."

The more competition Steam has the better. With Twitch having their own Discord Styled Desktop app things may turn out better for this in the years to come.

Wait, what? Twitch have their own mystery boxes now? I have a lot of questions about this, but i never use twitch so it probably isn't worth wasting neurons for. Someone else more invested should ask those questions though.

You're right to not get too excited, the boxes only have a chance to contain emotes (wow), badges (for real!) and bits (Ya-wait what? (They empower emotes apparently :O)) meaning they are pretty much valueless. They have mentioned they might be looking into adding discounts and coupons into the boxes but they said there are no plans at the moment and considering Twitch is owned by Amazon, it will be a long time before they even think about it.

All in all the Twitch service is pretty sub par compared to all it's competitors with only a 50 game line up (a lot of them being recent Ubisoft titles and micro-transactions for warframe and paladins), introducing yet another launcher as opposed to working with Steam (and they also chose UPlay as the secondary one -_-) and their terms and conditions for having a streamer sign on for a 5% cut are pretty shady for a number of reasons. Stand out examples are: You can't opt out once you opt in, you're not notified if you're actually earning anything until after you get your complete revenue payout where the figure will be detailed, the only feedback you get at the moment is how much money (if you make any) has been made on a small counter on your dashboard but they claim they're interested to hear what should be shown there, there's no way to project a message on your stream detailing someone has bought a game whilst watching you and they're intentionally vague about how the system works if you already have a sponsor you work with and "will discuss if necessary". Lastly even if you don't opt into the service Twitch will still advertise the option on your channel if you're playing a game they're now selling and you don't get any of the 5% cut of sales made on your stream. So trustworthy Twitch.

Damn, i suspected some sort of unsavoury intent from their announcement, but was sort of hoping there was a little self-restraint in their methods. It appears not to be the case. Consumers should vote accordingly with their currencies, companies only get away with what the public allow them to.

Yanno, I heard about this from YouTuber Nerdcubed, who REALLY didn't like the idea for a few reasons... mainly because this meant that there would be streamers who would opt into the program and then start talking up games, hiding their flaws, and so on to try and get their fans to buy them, so that they themselves can get a cut.
