Overwatch Anniversary Kicks Off with New Skins, Dances, and New Arena Maps

The Overwatch anniversary event is live, and now you can do a little dance in game.

The Overwatch anniversary event has kicked off, and will run through June 12. There's plenty of new content in this event, including a bunch of new legendary skins (which you can see below), and even dance emotes for your hero of choice.

This event includes more than 100 rewards, including what Blizzard says is its "largest-ever release of new Legendary skins." You can earn Anniversary Loot Boxes by playing during the event, and of course you can also purchase them if you desire. If you log in during the event, you'll get a free loot box as well. In addition to the new skins, you'll find 24 new voice lines, 25 new sprays, and 25 player icons. As is usual, the anniversary loot boxes will be gone once the event ends.

Also included in this update are three new arena maps. These smaller maps are available for up to 3v3 elimination matches. First up is Necropolis, a nighttime map set outside the Temple of Anubis. Castillo is an old fort that overlooks the bay near Dorado, and Black Forest is an old battlefield on the outskirts of Eichenwalde. These three maps won't be leaving when the event ends. Instead, they'll be part of the game henceforth.

You can find more information about the event on the official developer update video [] featuring Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan.

In that video, Kaplan says, "We can't thank you enough for what an amazing year it's been. And we look forward to the year in front of us. Thank you."

The promise of their horrible monetization system was that it would fund a constant drip feed of content. We've gotten three characters and only a few real maps over the last whole year. The "content" that has come out have been only a bunch of skins and temporary events. It's nice that they're adding more arena maps finally, but what about the actual main 6v6 game?

Translation: "This is the most expensive event we've put out yet. All of the new skins are Legendary, so good luck grinding out enough coins to get them all! Also, the dance emotes are event-locked and 750 coins each. Fuck you, pay me."

Yeah. This is definitely the event I'm gonna skip.

That might be a good idea, especially since I have a feeling that something funny is going on with these new "anniversary" loot boxes. I've opened about 7 "free" ones including the one that was gifted and in each loot box I've had at least one duplicate cheap item (spray/voice line) every time with the last box having all duplicates and I'm only level 22 on PC with most of the stuff I have unlocked having come from previous event stuff meaning there's a very small pool of vanilla duplicates I could get so it's almost like one of the slots in the boxes is set to deliberately roll as something I already have.

I mean it's really suspicious considering one of the boxes I opened unlocked a new spray from the vanilla pool and then the box I opened immediately after it presented the same spray as a duplicate.

Seven boxes is not really a good sample size. Quite the opposite in fact.

There's nothing suspicious about that at all. That's RNG at its finest.

That D.Va skin, tho.

Also, Power Ranger Genji?
i expected that Symmetra's skin would be the one i love the most (and i DO love it) but man... D.Va's skin is so good.

bonus: with the skin on, when you use the "hello" command, sometimes she says "hey daddy-o" (or something along those lines, i might be paraphrasing).

but hey, i'm a sucker for anything greaser/rockabilly related.

I went more for Kamen Rider.

First evening playthrough, managed to pop legendaries for Symmetra (YAY!) and Zarya (BOO![footnote]don't really use zarya, and much prefer the Cybergoth skin I already got as a drop[/footnote]). this was from two boxes from lvling, the free one and 5 from arcade.

Funny story, was kinda expecting to get my arse kicked in the new 1v1 mode, but won the only match I played comfortably - Every time I picked the character I was best with, while the other player picked the more 'pro' or 'cool' character. The only close round was where we both picked reaper, and the other player was not happy about that.

"Largest-ever release of new Legendary skins."

Until Blizzard can pull together enough collective shits about the people who purchase their products to actually put out substantial content at anything other than a pathetic rate, why should anyone care?

The community forums are angry about all the event garbage clogging up lootboxes that are making it a pain to get any skins.

lootboxes are a waste of money at this point, you could spend 50 bucks and not even get what you want from their little slot machine.

Other online games have put out way more content in the same time period and they aren't even making a billion dollars like Overwatch has.

Surprised that their only commenting now, as since the christmas event at least they increased the total event sprays and voice lines per character to three, rather than one of each like the summer and halloween events.

Ah, well... It's nice that we get three small new maps, but when do we get a new escort mission? Didn't think it would be so complicatesd to create a new location for not pushing the payload...

The new skins are nice. Just hoped we would maybe get to play the fall of the original Overwatch in an extra map.

The dance emotes are the really the highlight of this event. Reaper's and Reinhardt's gave me a laugh, Mei's tickled my anime nostalgia, and while I hate Genji players with a passion I have to say he has some smooth moves. Also I like how if you perfectly sync up Roadhog and Junkrat's dances they high five complete with a special sound effect.

I am totally going to use Reaper's new "dance" emote while I'm waiting for the team to regroup. It's going to be absolutely fantastic for that.

You might be there a while, as everybody goes in two-by two, instead of slowing up a bit. (I've had games (PLURAL) where the ONLY way I could get the team to group on was rez half the team as the other half arrived)

The fact that Winston does not do the monkey for his dance emote makes this whole anniversary a bust.

Oh well time to uninstall Overwatch, lawyer up, hit the gem and go into monk mode.

I just focus on having fun playing the game rather than worrying about the loot system, because buying RNG loot boxes is silly. I purchased the game on release and have not spent a penny more into it. The game is the important part; the loot system is just cool items that are nice to have, if you happen to get them. Just from duplicates, I have almost 6000 coins saved up, and that's after spending a previous 5000+ coins earned from duplicates; all without buying a single loot box, and I don't really play the game all that often (leveling to get loot boxes is hella easy if you play teamed with another person on your friends' list).

If you don't think the game is fun, then just move on to a different game, but I think the people bitching are just making a mountain out of a grain of dirt.
