Epic Announces that Fortnite Will Hit Early Access Next Month

Nearly six years after it was announced, Fortnite is coming to Early Access.

Epic Games first announced Fortnite on December 10, 2011. Since then it's had development woes, been previewed times [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135879-], and been under the radar as well. Now, almost six years after it was announced, Epic says the game will enter Early Access next month.

Fortnite lets you team up with your friends to build a fortress and defend it against hordes of monsters. You'll have to explore, craft, build, and fight to stay alive. Darren Sugg, Creative Director of Fortnite, said of the game, "Bringing Fortnite to life has been a true labor of love by a talented and dedicated team over many years. We're excited to share the experience and start playing along with more gamers in Early Access this summer."

You'll have to pay up to play Fortnite in Early Access. Pre-orders are available now, ranging from the $39.99 Standard Edition all the way to the $149.99 Limited Edition. There are two other options - the $59.99 Deluxe Edition and the $89.99 Super Deluxe Edition. As you might imagine, each edition comes with progressively more in-game goodies, including heroes, weapons, loot packs, and more. You can see a comparison of all four editions here [https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/en-US/pre-order]. Anyone who pre-orders will also get access to the game four days early.

Fortnite will enter Early Access on July 25 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. That means pre-order customers will get in on July 21.

Shouldn't Fortnite be out in two weeks?

I'm sorry. I couldn't resist doing that joke.

Nice, $40-150 to pre-order an Early Access title.

Aside from being cartoonishly greedy, the development version of the game isn't even out yet and they're already dividing it up into sections to try and get just a bit more money out of it. It's even got lootboxes and item levels, because of course it has.

I'll bet the in game store works just fine from day one. I'll also bet Jim Fuckin' Sterling Son will have something to say about this after the Bulletstorm re-release.

It's about bloody time. I was always curious about this game. As to the pricing scheme though, yeah it's pretty crappy.

Alphas has been out for quite a while and the game is pretty polished as it is currently. I've enjoyed my time in playing it.

Charging for beta testing through pre-order culture. Don't reward this.
It's not beta testing. It's early access.

Ugh this art style is lame.

Its like they are trying too hard to go the opposite spectrum of Gears of War/Unreal Tournament.

Stupid cartoony celshaded crap.

I'll admit that I'm somewhat intrigued. I hope they've spent their protracted delay time polishing off rough edges, though. There's _so_ many ways this could go wrong- inventory management, easily exploitable AI, microtransactions, multiplayer infrastructure, griefing... Not to mention the whole "protect survivors at any cost" thing suggests that segments of the game might end up becoming defacto escort missions, always everyone's favorite way to spend their game-playing time.

There's also the small matter that we seem to have passed the peak on the "crafting" genre. I don't doubt elements of crafting will persist in many games for some time to come, but as a central mechanic, it may not be quite the attraction that it once was.

I'll be curious to hear what reviewers have to say, at any rate.

Grey and Brown is superior.

A little expensive 40 ? for the EA, 20-25 ? it would have been more affordable. Originally Fortnite intended to be a free game in which in-game purchases could make profitable this choice.
