SEGA Nabs Rights For 'Alien' Games

SEGA has signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to make games based on the Alien movies for next-generation consoles and the PC.

Rob Lightner, SEGA vp of business development, is already in talks with actors from the popular film series such as Sigourney Weaver and Lance Henriksen to reprise their roles in their upcoming games. While details are still sparse, SEGA plans to create an FPS and an RPG based on the series with the first game targeted for 2008.

"We haven't finalized anything at this point, but everything is on the table," Lightner said. "It's important for everyone to understand the difference here: We're taking licensing to the next level with this franchise."

While the movies are a jumping point, Mike Gallo, the producer on the games, says that's just the beginning. "We'll go out of our way to tie the games into the films in unique ways," he said. "We're also looking at all Alien source material for inspiration, in addition to the films. We may incorporate some characters that fans know and love, and we may let gamers find answers to questions that were left unanswered in the movies."

Recently, Sega has secured licenses for Paramount's Charlotte's Web, Marvel Entertainment's Iron Man and the His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass trilogy [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/newsroom/view/65064-SEGA-Secures-His-Dark-Materials-Game-Rights] of films from New Line.

I have to say, I am not all that excited. Very few games based on movies are actually any good. There are few, of course, but for the most part games based on films rarely yield anything of value for the gamer. While I understand that these types of games offer publishers and developers an easier avenue to profit, they seem to only care that the game is set in the universe of the film, has some sort of goal, and is playable. Creativity often gets put on the back burner.
