Medieval Lithuanian Battles Come to Life in Real Warfare: 1242

Russian software house 1C Company has announced that work is underway on Real Warfare: 1242 [http://www.1cpublishing.eu/game/real-warfare-1242/overview], the first in a planned series of Real Warfare real-time strategy games.

Sick of the Second World War? Tired of playing around in fictionalized future conflicts? Do even the exotic sights and sounds of the Napoleonic campaigns leave you flaccid? Maybe you need to switch things up with a trip back in time to medieval Rus during its struggles with Swedish and Teutonic invaders and, worst of all, a rampaging Mongol horde.

A "realistic real-time strategy game based on authentic historic events," Real Warfare: 1242 will put players into the boots of Prince Alexander Nevsky as he fights to repel invaders and placate the Mongols. The game will focus on accurately recreating some of the most famous battlegrounds of medieval Eastern Europe, with huge swaths of territory to conquer rendered in "vivid, life-like" visuals.

Born the fourth son of Prince Yaroslav II of Vladimir, the real-life Nevsky rose to prominence following a series of military victories over Swedish and Teutonic knights. He also willingly subordinated his people to the Mongols, a decision which would have a significant impact on the development of the modern Russian nation. His veneration as a saint began soon after his death at the age of 43; he was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1547. In a 2008 poll that drew more than 50 million votes, Nevsky was chosen by the people as the greatest Russian of all time.

Real Warfare: 1242 is being developed exclusively for the PC and is expected to be released later this year.

Finally. Someone other than Total War are making these games. And they're making it in a good time period. Definatly looking forward to it.

What does Lithuania have to do with this game other than being antagonists?

And it seems to be fairly okay. Don't know how it'll end, but it seems okay.

I don't want to seem rude, but it's Lithuanian. Ahem. Sorry. I know it's hard to get all of these things written without any errors.

Looks like Total War with better land battles, but no campaign map and presumably, no naval warfare.

Sounds cool, but I don't dare play this game... I wrote a paper on Nevsky in my misspent youth and I'd probably get all anal-retentive on the historicity (and lose while doing so instead of paying attention to the game) and/or have PTSD flashbacks on due-dates.

It's a nifty era for setting games, though. Folks should give it a try.

Is it just me, or was I looking at Medieval: Total War 2 here? I wonder what will this game make stand out, make it any different from MTW2, I barely saw any difference. The cavalry charges didn't look very impressive I must say, crappy horse animations.

There definitely aren't many real time strategies with a medieval setting...

looks nice, but as someone who loves medieval battle games, they had better do something with this game that makes it different than total war, or it's not going to be very successful.

For now, mount and blade is my favorite medieval battle fix

I wonder if their first brainstorming session consisted of writing "Total War" on a chalk board with a line leading to the words "Rip Off?"

In all seriousness I have ran out of patience with total war already, so a new version of it made by a different company is very dull indeed.

Huh, I really liked Stronghold, so I might give this a shot, dunno.
For some reason I was expecting a FPS/FP-fighting game, though. There are plenty of medieval RTS out there. It would've been interesting to have melee combat or bows/crossbows.

It looks like they took total war, ripped the label off, made it a bit prettier, pasted a new label on it and made it theirs.
