If you're totally new the corporation I'd suggest would be EVE university. The corp itself will teach you all you need to know about gameplay, PvP, industry and everything else plus you get lots of free stuff to make starting out a lot easier and once you've been shown the ropes there's several larger alliances that recruit directly from EVE uni.

I personally also usually solo a lot in MMOs but EVE can easily be different with the right corp though. Just make sure you select one that's active in your own timezone, best to see which timezone corp leadership is in since every corp usually claims to be active in every timezone, you want to find one whose leaders are in your timezone. A specialized corp is usually the best as well, find one activity in EVE you want to focus on and then find a corp that focuses on that as well. Corporations that claim to do everything usually do nothing.

If you manage to find the right corp then meeting people and grouping up is rather easy, almost all activities are better done in groups and there's no limit on group sizes so active corporations usually have a fleet active that anyone can join to participate. This is why you want a specialized corp whose leadership is active at the same time you are, because then that fleet will be lead competently and will be doing what you want to be doing.
Cheers I'll think about it. Dropping into an MMO is always a big thing, but EVE is just so fun to follow, it'd be a shame not to try it

This is what I have in mind when I imagine the most big-ass space battle of all time.

EVE Online is a game for insane grinders and virtual tycoons, and I won't even put a toe into that game. But man, just watching these players...
Dude Ive tried to get into it twice but while its so damned intriguing! I just cant let myself get into it really.
Same here, I think it is the barrier to entry issue. You have to spend at least a month getting yourself set up to run anything of value in the game and you are bored to tears the entire time (or at least I was). That being said, I have watched my buddy play this game for years now and I would love to get to the point where he is, as it looks like loads of fun.
Actually in the CFC and HBC I know of atleast newbies can spend about a week training into a ship known as a Rifter and are very valuable in PVP for fleets like this.

They are known as "Rifterbros" and people will shower them with millions of isk (In game money) just for being new. When I joined my corporation I said "OMG A TITAN!" in my first big combat, and I made half a billion dollars because people thought I was so cute.
Well, I must get invited into one of these corporations next time I try Eve

AWWWWWWEEEEEE RIFTER BROS!!!!! CUTTTTEEEE!!!!

Those screens are actual-framerate I'll bet.

It wasn't. =D Skip ahead to about half way, you'll see it was pretty stable, all things considered.
The video is actually sped up 90% hence why you hear him stop talking. he was only getting 10 fps from how overloaded the servers were. that video you see there was over 4-5 hours.
Oh wow, I probably should have done more than skim over it. Thanks!

The Rifter had a use beyond looking AWESOME? I piloted one because I loved its design and that was the only reason!
Back when I was still training pirates, the Rifter was the ship for new players looking for some cheap PvP. These days, it's now inferior in every way to a plethora of other ships. You know, except in looking awesome.

How bad is Eve's lag nowadays with CCPs servers and time modulation?
A lot better. Though this will have broken 0.0 guidelines whereby you have to register a >1000 man battle with CCP 24hrs prior to a battle to ensure CCP can allocate processing power to the system you're in.

That didn't crash the server completely?

I'm impressed! I haven't heard of any MMO server that can handle those kind of numbers + spell effects and survive. Moreover how do people's computers handle that many ships and graphical effects at the same time? WoW always lagged out every time there were more then 3 40-man raids (120 people) in the same spot. Starcraft 2 servers start to lag out at around 700 units.

It must have been laggy as hell though.

Awesomeness.
CCP fights lag with lag. Time Dilatation slows everyone down allowing all commands to get thru.

I hear 90% was in effect, so 1 min, took 10 mins. But all commands get through so it is a lot better then losing your ship because the server missed a command.

Even impromptu battles that happen spontaneously? What happens if you do not register also?

You can request a solar system be loaded on a dedicated node to lessen the lag. Also the new Time Dilation feature tries to alleviate the lag by deliberately lagging the system so actions can go through in an orderly faction, ditching them when they fail to.

I'm unsure of the consequences, CCP simply request that you notify them so that they can make appropriate preparations to the server. I've a feeling that due to the utterly insane nature of this escalation that CCP will just let it go, not to mention the publicity this has just gotten their game.

Thanks for reminding me of the name of that feature. I remember them bringing that in on the Empyrean Age patch.

No you don't. Even if you play solo there's plenty you can do when new if you take the trouble to learn about the game, and if you get involved with a corp (what with it being an MMO and all), then you can be properly involved right from the start. You won't be flying all the big, expensive ships right from the start of course, but you can still be useful and have fun. It's only slow and boring if you just sit there on your own mining and doing missions and waiting until you can fly a big ship before looking for the fun.

It's also worth noting that they've done a lot to improve things for new players in the last couple of years - there are now proper tutorial missions with story arcs that introduce you to most non-PvP parts of the game, faction warfare makes a good introduction to PvP, plus there have been various changes to character creation, early skill progression, and so on. It's never going to be as easy to jump into as something like WoW, but it's a lot easier than it used to be and far easier than many people seem to think.

There's still a problem, if you want to be a part of such massive battles, you have to work in EVE. And don't get paid.
Like people here posting how much real money it has costed...
The trouble is that that "cost" is completely meaningless. Someone else already pointed out, the vast majority of in-game money is earned by simply playing the game. However, even that isn't entirely accurate - all the in-game money is earned by playing the game, you're just allowed to use real money to transfer it between players - one player earns 200kk isk in game, another player pays real money for a PLEX and sells it to the first player. No in-game money was created by involving the real money. So equating losses with real money lost just doesn't make sense. Sure, you have to spend plenty of time in the game in order to earn that much pretend money, but the same is true for every other MMO. WoW doesn't just hand you high-end gear when you first start the game, you have to spend lots of time levelling your character and running raids or PvP in order to earn it. If you don't enjoy doing that, then of course it will seem like boring work. It's no different in Eve. If you don't enjoy the gameplay, then earning the expensive stuff is just boring work. If you do enjoy it, then it's just playing a game.

Nothing happens. If you notify CCP of an upcoming battle they'll allocate extra resources to try to keep the serving stable. If you don't notify them, they won't. That's all there is to it.

It was quite an impressive battle. The only thing close to that I've ever seen were high level tower battles in Anarchy Online (I'd estimate 250-500 players, the entire minimap was either blue or orange).

........If EVE was free to play, I would be all over it. XD I love hearing stories like this.

I just don't like the subscription model.

...Dammit, now I wanna play a space sim. ...Guess I'll install X3 now. Although that lacks the human interaction that makes EVE amazing.

seriously, you could make a movie out of this
Not the same scale, but an actual short film: http://www.clearskiesthemovie.com/

(ep. 1 has only about 4 different ships, admittedly, but ep.2 has a 30v30 or so with one of the big ships you saw deployed in the video you linked to as a plot object)

...and then all those ships combine into two really huge ones, and it all turns into some mix of Macross and Gurren Lagann...

Sod it I think i'm gonna resub in a couple of months. Unfortunately my toons will be stuck in hostile deep 0.0, so I'm hoping a DM will kindly move both accounts worth of toons to high sec where I can relearn the game.

Just try not to be one of those ppl who repeatedly starts trial accounts every couple of months and never getting anywhere. As losing your ship doesn't make the time spent getting the isk to build / buy it a waste of time, it's like darksouls in that regard, no there are only 2 ways wasted effort in Eve, #1 lost time in skill training, so forgetting to log in and keeping your toon learning new skills all the time, or wasting time on skills you don't need. Just messing around with trial accounts is the ultimate waste of time as your toon is wiped clean everytime.

So if you're playing Eve and undecided on if you'll like the game, Add another 30 days to your trial. For starters if you quit and decide to play again in the future you can use the same toon. Plus you will find alot of the best corps have no interest in trials and ppl with under a month playtime. If you give the game alittle longer you should start to see the better sapects of Eve open up, as the game doesn't show its full colours until you are 2-3 months into the game. Not that you won't beable to find lots to do to keep yourself busy but you will find yourself playing a supporting role. If you want to fight fleet battle like in the vid, then try out Eve University for a taster, but after that you will want to get into a 0.0 owning corp, when I played the game most had an requirement of a toon trained up for battleships, the standard ship of a fleet battle. It will take you 2-3 months of skill training atleast before you can fly one properlly.

The other way of wasting your time is loosing your main PVE ship that is the best way of generating ISK, there are several tiers for ISK generation and it can take a while advancing to the next tier, loosing your main PVE ship can set you back to earning peanuts until you can replace it. Having a well stocked hanger is a must. And while you can lose your ships in the game, if you are PVEing loosing one is usually down to stupidity and laziness or not knowing the rules, Or been in a corp at war.

You race is important for PVP too, as many fleet commanders don't want missile armed ships in their battle fleet (as it takes time for the missiles to hit the target and by that time the insta hit weapons will have destroyed it. So if you pick Caldari who most of thseir ships are missile boats you wont beable to fly them in fleet battles, and while you still have a small selection of gun ships they are expensive to buy. That said Caldari missile ships rock at PVE like mission running, when I played the game the (missile) Drake was the only battlecruiser able to run lv4 missions, they are much cheaper to buy and dont take as long to train to fly compared to Battleships which is the main lv4 mission running ship

I'd suggest you start an alt account too, even if its just trial accounts, as you can do so much more, especially if you get it into an hauler. The best way to play Eve is to have 2 accounts 1 with skills for PVE (Caldari) and the other training up for PVP, specialising will let you do those things quicker, a jack of all trades toon is something to avoid for newcommers. Also if your'e running 2 accounts top 0.0 corps you apply to join will take you more seriously. Plus you will have more fun running dual accounts at the same time and its much safer in 0.0 / low sec

sorry for the wall of text but tips on Eve is something difficult to put across in one paragraph.

EDIT BTW you can be an pirate in the game, it's a good way of making money while pvping, attack ships in low sec and ransom them, especially their escape capsule as if that is destroyed theylose an small % of their last skill trained, so if it was a major skill they wont want to get podded.

What?

OT: Who else thinks this would make a great movie? All it needs is a number of fighter ships darting throughout that battle and it's golden. Could you imagine the mess afterwards there?
