Ninja Theory's Enslaved Officially Announced

Ninja Theory, developer of Heavenly Sword, is now working on the post-apocalyptic Enslaved.

Namco Bandai has officially announced and released screenshots of Ninja Theory's Enslaved, a game that appears graphically similar to Heavenly Sword, but with a very different setting. The game takes place more than 150 years from now in a ruined, post-apocalyptic future - but don't expect visuals in the same vein as Fallout 3: Enslaved's future looks very organic and green from what we see in the first screens.

Above is Trip, an AI partner to the game's main character, Monkey. After both become captured by human traders, Trip realizes that only with Monkey's help will she be able to see freedom again. She hacks into Monkey's slave headband to "enslave" him, but this process also makes the link between the two a matter of life and death. If one dies, so does the other.

The relationship between Monkey and Trip is likely the reason why Enslaved is being billed as a "tactical action-adventure" that "challenges players to employ a mix of combat, strategy and environment traversal." In other words, you're going to have to make sure both characters survive at all times. The game's premise sounds intriguing, but we can only hope it doesn't devolve into what is essentially a long and annoying escort mission.

Monkey's main weapon will be a staff that he uses for melee attack combos, blocks, counters, and the like. He will also be able to actually rip enemy robots apart with a finishing move, taking their weapons for himself - the above screen appears to be of one of these finishing moves. This ability feels like a nice contrast to the combat that this genre typically employs. Below we see a screen of Monkey just normally fighting with his staff.

Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies and also worked on Heavenly Sword, is returning to work on Enslaved. Composer Nitin Sawhney and writer Alex Garland, who wrote the movie screenplay for 28 Days Later, will be working on the game as well. Enslaved is scheduled for release on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010.

I'm not too sure about this game, it looks like Prince of Persia in an urban setting (With the cheesy love story turned up to 11) It should be at least an alright game.

On another note, is anyone reminded of Inuyasha looking at this game? I hate that show and everytime I look at this game I get the same vibe.

So wait... this is basically a North American retelling of Journey of the West? What with the effective "Sanzo The Monk" in Trip and the unwilling companion of the "Monkey King" in Monkey.

Anime Fans, this is why the story sounds so familiar, Inu Yasha, Dragon Ball, Sayuki and about a million other animes are all based off of this very old story. It's probably the most well known story in Asia as a matter of fact.

I knew it! I knew this reminded me of Inuyasha! I don't think I could bring myself to buy it if it resembles Inuyasha in any way.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Game informer (Not a magazine known for their timliness) run a story on this two weeks ago?

ASide from that, I'm actually kind of interested in this.

Because I don't like %99 of anime, especially Inuyasha, the only one that I thought was any good was Neon Genesis Evangelion. Getting a bit off topic here...

OP: I guess if the platforming is solid and fun and the action is.....tolerable I might rent it. It just seems like PoP with a slightly altered setting and characters.

Sure, it was just officially announced, however.

How can you conduct an interview with the head of the development team and subsequently publish it in a magazine without it being official?

Given that it is by Team Ninja, the action should be balls tighteningly sweet. Also I would reccomend the Hellsing OVA if you haven't already tried it and not liked it, and if that is the case I think that we shouldn't contact eachother again after this.

It's not that it wasn't official in GI, but that was sort of an exclusive. When the company sends a press release to the rest of the world it is considered "official." That's the way I see it anyway. Plus, these are new screens not found in that issue (not that I read GI...).

This is a little old, Game Informer already ran a story on it, however, I am excited to see if this game gets any critical acclaim, it's looking to be the closest thing to a "summer blockbuster movie" game. Andy Serkis is directing, which already gives me high hopes, but also, the writers from 28 Days Later are writing for this game. I'm hopeful for this game.

Thank you, then. Learn something new everyday, they say...

I saw this in the Game Informer magazine and it did grab my attention, but I'll wait and see how this pans out before I buy it.

This game looks pretty awesome. It's a really neat idea, and there's some great talent behind it. I'll definitely keep an eye on it.
