Thus Champions Online manages to have a setting which is completely ludicrous even by comic book standards.

Kool-Aid comic book anyone? Or how about batman taking down the largest evil of them all..... Rock & Roll...

This is a REALLY shat review that acts like WoW doesn't have it's HUGE share of retarded whoopie cushion humor (Eat the seed, then the next part of the quest you go into a loo and shit out the seeds, then loot your shit for the pooped out seeds to return to collect the quest) Or how about Night-Elves? Talking about their "1337 skills". Face it man, if you can't stand humor in an MMO go play shadowbane. Yuo will get a realistic experience.... Like level 100's ganking a level 20 who spent hours collecting 30k cash and stealing all their cash and loot drops. People with no sense of humor. And boring straight forward quests and gameplay. Sounds right up your lane mister bad reviewer.

I don't think you get it. Humour is ok, there is nothing wrong with that, in moderation. But when game developers overdo it, the game suffers. It's about finding a balance that works, and Champions Online doesn't.

I tried the Trial of it, and honestly, I see nothing from. It's silly, it's zaney, and it's very reminiscent of 80% of the comic books out there.

I guess most gamers can't go about an MMO without being told they are the epic srs hero of the land 80 times while ignoring the fact there are 1 million + other heroes of the same land killing the same main bad dude over and over again.

You do know this isn't a review, right? It's an opinion column. Nor is he saying humor is a bad thing; he's saying that there is a point at which a game that doesn't take itself seriously *at all* takes the fun out of it.

WoW has some silly quests, but it also has a lot of serious ones, too. That's the difference.

The real joke is that Champion's Online IS a joke. From the weird full-instance system, to the consistent bugs and crashes (for example I now can only play on the lowest graphical setting after the latest patch for no reason at all [and have been ignored by tech support for 2.5 weeks about it]), to the non-stop pop culture references, to the lackluster PvP, to the awkward party system, to the limited game areas (yeah there are only THREE), to the stupid missions where 18 people are sitting around a caged hero waiting and waiting for him to respawn in the cage so the next person in line can get the points, to the boring WoW combat...
Eck...I'm tired of even complaining about why this game sucks. Its not horrible, but the best I'll give it is a 5.5/10. I only bought it for the Star Trek beta (which now I am worried about) and was willing to play it until I found that EVERY LINE/NPC/MISSION TITLE IS A JOKE OR POP CULTURE REFERENCE. That was the proverbial straw that broke the camal's back.

I hate being the one aswell. How long did you try the trial for? It isn't so bad in the beginning of the game, but you get too much of it. Besides, things don't have to be taken to the extreme. It doesn't have to be "you're the one" or "look at us, all our characters have pants on their heads", it should be somewhere in between. Zaney humour is funny, in small doses, but when you get enough of it, it's just annoying.

Heh, I don't know, ToonTown did decently enough with it >.<

And I only played for a few days. I didn't want to get TOO sucked into it while I have other games to concentrate on. Yes sillyness can be too silly. But honestly, Champions Online has my respect for either going all silly (Making it more of a cartoon superhero world) instead of trying to be srsbsnss while punting dwarfs and catapaulting gnomes XD Champion Online I would definetly recommend though.. as long as you start it with the right mood. If you are expecting "FF7 srs emo chronicles" style stories, then go to Aion or something. If you are looking for a game thats just a game you can play with your friends, laugh, relax, and have fun, go for Champions Online.

Shamus doesn't do reviews, per se. Also, what makes you think there's any implied (there sure as heck isn't any stated) comparison with WoW here? What does WoW have to do with anything Shamus says?

For some people any mention of MMO has to immediately lead back to WoW, in both a negative and positive way. Just like how posting an article or video showing an opinion about something has to automatically be turned into a review depending on how much someone disagrees. It makes it easier to lure people into responding to them.

Anyway, I agree with Shamus here. I don't like my games being too serious, but there's got to be a limit to how zany it can be before it forgets whatever it was that it set out to do. That's the danger of spoofing in any case, but with something that you're supposed to be able to immerse yourself into for countless amount of hours it just hurts twice as bad than a comic book or movie.

Ah it's not that bad. But I rarely read Quest descriptions. Dropped that habit somewhere, probably in WoW.

The strongest point of the game is the hero creator. You can do very creative and interesting things with it.
Example, one of my champs 'Loan Shark':
http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/8415/screenshot2009100300244.jpg
But yeah he's not a very serious concept. =p

I also like that you can simply choose the powers/skills you want. The class based differentiation most games use does tire me. Too much confinement and such.

This game has some weaknesses and some strengths. For me it comes down to:
1) Create an awesome Hero.
2) Give him awesome Powers.
3) Beat up bad guys.
4) When bored go to 1)

Will be fun for a month or maybe two. But to be honest: I don't expect it to last longer.

Dear god. I am so not picking up Champions Online...
If you weren't really going to get it anyway then don't. But if you were going to get it then don't let this stop you. Tastes differ. I though Snake Gulch was brilliant fun. The cheesy B-grade humor sets this game apart; if they gave that up it would be flat and lose a lot of character.

If you like Batman with Adam West then you will appreciate the humor in CO. But if it HAS to be Christian Bale then maybe give it a pass.

It's just a revamped City of Heroes. That's more of a reason not to pick it up.

I agree with Shamus.

I found the humor in Hellgate: London to be VERY off-putting. A little goofiness in an MMO can go a long way.

Oddly enough, I find that MMOs intended for children (Free Realms & Wizard 101) tend to have better quest writing than many of the traditional MMOs.

And don't even get me started on the free-to-play Asian MMOs, like Last Chaos. Even the NAME is nonsensical!
