Stardock CEO Dishes on Sales Numbers, GFW Live, and More

Stardock CEO Brad Wardell seems to stay in the news perpetually, this time giving the scoop on various topics of interest.

In a recent interview with Shacknews [http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=1203], Stardock CEO Brad Wardell let loose some pretty interesting information about the truth in sales numbers, Games for Windows Live, and digital distribution (again). The man has stuff to say, you've got to give him that.

He first expressed some displeasure with anyone that may label Stardock's Sins of a Solar Empire as a "niche" title, stating: "it's probably one of the best-selling PC games of the last couple years. We're not talking about some game that sold 20,000 copies. We're talking about a game that's approaching a million full-priced units sold. How can you call that niche?" Makes sense to me, though the nature of the title is probably why it's often considered niche, as Brad Wardell says himself in the interview that a multiplayer game is "two hour, minimum."

This led to a conversation about real sales numbers, and what top ten lists really, or don't really, mean. He basically says that you can "never" get real sales numbers, due to pack-in deals and the like. Even Amazon.com sales charts can be deceptive. "Number one on Amazon.com means you sold a hundred copies that day. Whereas Walmart or Best Buy might sell 20,000 copies of your game a week," he reveals.

Though some publishers may believe digital distribution will save the PC [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94620-Publishers-Believe-Digital-Distribution-Will-Save-PC-Says-Stardock-CEO], Wardell does not believe that digital distribution will kill off retail anytime soon. According to him: "Demigod has sold more copies at Walmart than anywhere else. Even though it's on Impulse ... [and] we sold thousands and thousands of copies this week." So, the retail PC market is thriving after all? Let's never speak of the death of the PC again.

The last interesting tidbit I got from the interview was Wardell's opinion on Games for Windows Live. While he originally advocated the service, and even wanted Stardock's upcoming Elemental: War of Magic to be a Games for Windows Live title, he now pretty much seems to despise it. About the service, he says: "they have things where, oh, if you want to use Games for Windows Live to update your game, you have to go through [their] certification. And if you do it more than X number of times, you have to pay money." He ends with: "If Games for Windows Live maintains that strategy and they take over, I'm done. I'm not making PC games. I would be done." That's serious business.

I've never heard of Stardock. They a good gaming company? I guess if they made Demigod they must be pretty good.

It comes highly recommended by myself and everyone I've spoken to who has played it. I loved it.

Stupid me, I was probably a hundred meters from the shop earlier looking for a place that sells decent headphones, thought about it, but didn't even turn towards GAME... stupid me... I'll regret it...

What?! Exactly how does an RTS match take that long? Even if both players are experienced and evenly matched...

There's also the fact that each gaming magazine will dub a title GOTY for different reasons...

Shouldn't the issue of "unit sales" bring websites like vgchartz.com to prominence then?

Because the maps for Sins, even 2 player, are larger then most games 8+ player maps and ship movement etc is fairly slow. Fantastic game though.

Stardock has a very good reputation, even better than Valve if you ask some people.
They put NO DRM on Sins of a Solar Empire, just to prove that a game will sell based on its own quality. And it did. The game itself is pretty good and it gets constantly updated to this day even though it was release on Feb 2008, almost 2 years ago. The gameplay today has evolved so much from where it started back in '08.

And the 2nd new expansion will be released next year!

Stardock is a company that releases DRM-free games, gives retarded release dates(MONTHS difference between America, Europe and Australia even for online-only games like Demigod) and then complains that the games are being downloaded a lot.

For actual game quality, I don't know never played any of their games, and their complaining also made sure I'll never play one.

I'm glad Wardell hates Games for Windows Live as much as I do. I've only had to deal with that in two games and I already hate it completely. The whole system is inherently screwed up due to the fact that cd keys from any GFWL game will work on any other.

They published Demigod. Gas powered games, the same guys who made Supreme Commander, made Demigod. They also published Sins of a Solar Empire, which was made by Ironclad.

What Stardock has developed themselves is the Galactic Civilization series, one of the best 4X games I have ever played and they are now working on Elemental.

GOTY should not be based on "number of units sold". If that were the only criteria then Madden ## or Halo # would be the only GOTY contenders in a given year.

You really would have to play it to find out. He doesn't lie about that. This game is on the level of Supreme Commander, on some maps even more so, as far as the scale of the battles and maps go.

And somehow they always are. Not Madden as much, though it does normally sweep any and all sports categories. Until NHL started getting good that is.

Damn straight. Of course, I just cobbled together a DX11 rig, so I have a vested interest :)

As for retail, for PC games I try to avoid it as much as possible. I have a 1TB hard drive for a reason (besides porn). In fact, I'm hoping that Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 show up on Steam (or Impulse) rather than one of EA's proprietary channels. I just hate their downloader.

Dead on about every single point he makes except one:
Impulse sucks and is in dire need of being re-designed or scrapped altogether and being replaced with Steam in exchange for Stardock's working "offline mode" code.

I've unfortunately had to cut off my support of stardock since this happened [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.146464].

If you support a company that supports an employee that does extremely volatile and terrible things. Well quite frankly your products aren't worth my time.

Maybe in a second hand market, but otherwise they have died for me for now.

I just don't see the logic. "So what if he is an rectum blasting jackass? It isn't like it is Fox's Fault!" "Ugh...they pay him..." "So! I like them because they support my conservativism?!?" "Do you really require support to legitimize your views to yourself?" "PANCAKES!"

Sins of a Solar Empire is both much slower-paced and on a much larger scale than most other RTS games. I've got match (with myself and 8 AI opponents) still going after 30 hours of play...
