Taiwan Online Game Market Booming

San Francisco based Pearl Research estimates the online game market in Taiwan will exceed $300 million this year.

The key findings of the study are as follows:

"Three things that are driving growth in the Taiwanese online gaming market are compelling and culturally relevant game content, the low cost of playing online games ($12-$15 a month), and a 67% internet penetration. While massively multiplayer online role-playing games, or MMORPGs, represent the largest portion of the online games market, casual games are growing at a faster pace.
"The introduction of 'free-to-play' games has helped revitalize Taiwan's online game industry; game operators believe a free-to-play model convinces gamers to spend more than they would with a traditional subscription model on things like virtual items or services to enhance gameplay.
"Finally, Taiwan has a robust development community, with many companies operating since the early 1980's."
