Sony Confirms Facebook Coming to PSN

Rumors prove true as Sony announced plans today for Playstation Update 3.10, including Facebook support and revamped Photo category.

PlayStation blog [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96047-Facebook-Rumored-to-Be-Coming-to-PS3]. Foremost on the list of new features is the ability for users to link a Facebook account with their PlayStation Network account and update their status with PlayStation Store purchases and each time they earn a Trophy, according to the user's criteria. Also in update 3.10 is a revised Photo category and the new plethora of colors available for your PSN ID on the XrossMediaBar. No timeframe for the update was mentioned other than "soon."

The announcement is timely, as today is the day that Facebook and Twitter debut on the competing Xbox Live service. There is no information, however, from Sony whether it has plans for Twitter to be supported natively on PSN. Eric Lempel, PlayStation Network operations director, did mention that, "you can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3's built-in web browser."

I suppose Sony should get marks for at least attempting to compete with XBL, but this announcement just falls flat, in my opinion. What does Sony gain by announcing this on the day a competitor launches something similar? Pure lip service for diehard Sony fans?

I've said it before, and I will say it again. Sony would be better served releasing something new rather than copying a competitor.

Umm, you have a web browser....

anyway....
---edit-----

The Xbox Face book is dumb, Just give us a web browser!!!

the xbox facebook looks like it was thrown together, during a MicroSoft Lunch Break,
as a Practical joke!
It's just the normal xbox menu, but No! this ones BLUE!!!!
And all you can do is look at photos and update/read status's

No video's no games(understandable)
and LastFM crashed My xbox every time I loaded a Song...
Well that was the beta, so maybe the final is a little less annoying...

Can't you already do this on the web browser? Ah well, I probably wont use it. At least it's one less reason for people to keep justifying being ripped off for Xbox Live.

What I want to know is why is there no YOUtube app or XBOX or PS3?
they both have cameras! And way more than enough CPU power.

I think You can watch Youtube vids, on the ps3.... The wii can....

How does this help anyone? Any person who might actually care about Facebook is already using it, through a superior interface at that...

I too often wonder why sony feel the need to copy only the most useless features of the 360: facebook, achievement/trophies, and... well, the netflix thing is pretty cool.

But if they're going to keep copying the 360 I would like to see some of the cooler features like consumer dev kits so we can make our own psn games or a custom soundtrack for every game so I can play all those mp3s I have on the hdd with a game other than Warhawk.

Don't we already have Facebook in the first place? lol. I guess this would be cool. I can see the practical application to it.

Vidzone? I-player? Home? In game twitter support? No you're right, sony shoudl do something new. Not to mention the fact that we've actually had FB and Twitter from the get go.

It's really becoming damned near impossible to escape facebook, if you have anything even remotely resembling the internet in the vicinity of you.
I still don't see the point of it, facebook and iPlayer worked fine through the browser, why do I need shortcuts to them?

? You can use the iPlayer on a 360?

SKYplayer is on the 360, which came after the iplayer on the ps3. Only works if you have a sky subscription though.

I don't understand why people seem to be moaning that Sony are copying their competitors; yes they are, but come on, if it is a good idea, doesn't everyone benefit? I mean, if no one took ideas from a rival, we wouldn't have rumble or analogue sticks.

Do I sense Sony are copying the XBox's new ability to use FaceBook? Hm, I wonder.

Back when Facebook for Xbox 360 was first announced, MS mentioned screenshot support. (I understand it wouldn't be standard for all games though. Also I'm not talking about what Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 are doing.) Anyway, you would easily upload your screenshots to your Facebook profile. Ignoring the Facebook aspect, just being able to make screenshots on your Xbox 360 would be really neat. (Later I heard a rumour about recording video as well.)

I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 let you make screenshots right from the start; Sony is a bit cooler about some things than MS.

I'm sure that the PS3 web browser can already do facebook and twitter. I never use said browser though so I don't really do anything like that on it. If it is easy to use on PSN I might consider using Facebook every now and then.
It does Myspace and every other website I've tried. Yes that means this website too. Although it seems to be having trouble with the "Escape to the Movies" videos,
