Sony Splits with Club Penguin

Sony's potential acquisition of Club Penguin fails to materialize.

Slightly over a month ago, news that Sony was going to purchase [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/71844-Sony-in-Talks-to-Acquire-Club-Penguin] Club Penguin, a child-friendly virtual world, for $500 million hit the internet. However, recent reports reveal that buyout talks have ended between the two companies. Allegedly, Club Penguin began to raise the price and Sony backed away from the high numbers. Rumors also estimate that another buyer may be playing a part in bidding up Club Penguin. Potential suitors include AOL, Disney and Viacom.

There's an order of 1000 discrepancy between the $$$'s in this news item and the linked news item. Which number is correct?

Gah, I couldn't count that high with my fingers and toes and drowned in the sea of numbers.

For something on topic, Disney and Viacom are much more likely to make a $500 million acquisition than the AOL team. Viacom is needs some more web properties, but Disney has been quicker to embrace online web games and Web 2.0.

Man, that's huge. And I know the guys that created this thing. $500,000 is a good chunk of change but $500 million is amazing.

Well, from what I've read, it's got a decent profit stream. A web company virtual world that's profitable? That'll make any merger and acquisitions guy hot and steamy.

It would be a decent purchase as far as I am aware. My little brothers and all their friends are really into Club Penguin. It seems to be the facebook for kids.
