I Done Myself Wrong Through Gaming

Frustration abounds when it comes to videogames - whether it's a mis-timed jump, or a corrupted save, games are not lacking ways of doing us wrong. But what about when we abuse the games themselves, causing harm to ourselves, through gaming?

Whether it's knocking off quality time with friends and family to play one more round of Modern Warfare, or preferring a New Years party in Second Life to one in real life, over-gaming can often have some very real, very negative consequences. Just ask Jorge Garcia, who lost an entire year to gaming:

[blockquote]Without casting blame or shunning accountability, I readily admit that I was addicted to games. What is addiction if not the unhealthy and unreasonable enjoyment of something to the degree that one's life suffers as a result? But I was not a passive victim in this relationship - games did not waylay me and force me to play them. My story is fundamentally no different than those of the addicts of any other substance. It is a mixture of irresponsibility, self-denial and personal issues that initially had little to do with videogames.[/blockquote]

But Jorge's isn't entirely a story of gaming gone wrong, it's a story of self-reflection, rebirth and growth. As he puts it: "I can never have those years back, but to write them off as "lost" would be unfair. I had those years to think and discuss what had happened to me, and I learned from difficulties I would not otherwise have faced." Read more of Jorge's story in "The Lost Years [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_194/5881-The-Lost-Years]," and share your own stories of addiction and rebirth with us.

What does Flunky mean?

I can't actually say I've ever been addicted to a game, but it might be down to my lack of contact with MMORPGs and such.

Can't say I feel anywhere near the same, I'd end up gaming with half my mates at any given time we picked up a controller: fun ensued. Even on an 'offline' game we'd still be able to talk through the likes of party chat.

"My story is fundamentally no different than those of the addicts of any other substance."

Sorry but I just can't take this seriously. One of my friends hung himself a few months ago after years of heroin addiction.

Personally, the defining trait of an addiction is less "time invested" and more a matter of priorities. There have been times in my life (some might even say the majority thereof) where playing games has taken a primary role in my life, to the detriment of schoolwork, my home life, and/or my career.

Basically: Yes, I have been addicted to games. Repeatedly. Arguably, I'm addicted to games right now, although on the declining leg of the cycle. I don't blame games intrinsically for the fact that my life deteriorates during these times: Ceasing to play games inevitably results in my investing that time in something else equally non-productive, such as reading.

Unfortunately, I seem to have a personality that is strongly biased towards addiction. Gaming is one outlet of that personality, true, but so are relationships, books, alcohol and TV. The best argument I've heard for why I have such a personality is that normal life, as normal people live it, isn't enough of a challenge. When things are going well, I neglect them to find a challenge somewhere else, and when things are going badly, then I find myself able to focus fully on my life and avoid addictive behavior.

Yes I have done stuff like turning a phone off when playing an mmo but my life wouldnt suffer because of it. I still did other stuff, my first year in colege I didnt renew a sub to an online game fearing it would be a distraction but I did renew it this year, and things were fine.

I wouldn't consider myself to have especially strong willpower, but putting things in perspective life and education are alot more important than any computer game. So I would grudgingly take the books out. Sure they are a great way to relax and spend free time but too much of anything can be damaging.

I'm not really addicted to games, I'm just lazy. Basically, even without games I'd find something else equally unproductive to spend my time on. This is clearly evidenced by the times my PC was away for repairs - I just read more books and watched more TV...

Yup. Behavioral "addiction" is markedly different form substance abuse.

It's all well and good to seriously consider how gaming addiction may resemble gambling addiction, sexual obsession, or other compulsive behaviors, but it's not the same as shit that directly alters your brain chemistry.

Well, to be honest there ARE people who are addicted to video games. However, people can get psychologically addicted to almost anything, so it's not like games are a great evil corrupting the young. They are just convenient.

And the "I'm not an addict, I'm just lazy!" defence should be used with caution. Sometimes it might land you in more crap... ;)
