Mass Effect 2 Will Span Two DVDs

Mass Effect 2 [http://www.bioware.com] is so huge, so massive, so mind-blowingly big, it's actually going to have to be spread across two separate DVDs.

An image of the Dragon Age: Origins [http://masseffect.bioware.com/info/collectors/], a pretty beefy game itself, fit on one disc; Mass Effect 2 couldn't possibly require two game discs... could it?

Turns out it could, and it does! BioWare Community Coordinator Chris Priestly has revealed that both the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game, regular and collector's editions alike, will span two DVDs, with the collector's edition including a third DVD with a "making of" video and other content. The PC version of the game will be a standard installation with no disc swapping, while the Xbox 360 version will require one disc swap midway through the game.

"You can install the game to your Xbox 360 Hard Drive as long as you have enough memory to do so and have the correct disc in the drive when you play," Priestly wrote on the Mass Effect forum [http://meforums.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=711031&forum=144&sp=30]. "Even though there is a disc swap, it occurs at a carefully planned place in the game (that does not interfere with gameplay) and is done once. You do not swap back and forth. One swap and then done."

And why on Earth would BioWare need two DVDs - that's over nine gigabytes of capacity - for one single game? "Because you cannot fit this much awesomeness on one disc," Priestly said.

Mass Effect 2 [http://meforums.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=711031&forum=144&sp=30] comes out on January 26, 2010.

Must... Go... Get... Mass... Effect... 1...

Mass Effect 2 looks so utterly awesome that I'm kinda kicking myself at missing most of Mass Effect due to vehicle section issues...

Bioware sold me when they told me the collector's edition had a metal case.

Stop taunting me with your game that isn't out yet.

I'm guessing there's a lot of cutscenes packed onto those discs
People always seem to be surprised when an RPG has a lot of story dialogue/cutscenes in it. To this day I'm never quite sure why.

Awww, awwwww, nerdgasm.

But really, this is going to be EPIC, the game looks a lot more polished then DA, but it's TWICE THE SIZE, while the main quest be like...120 hours by it's self? I mean really...This is going to be great.

Just hope I can get the Speacil Edition, as the debt card is a bit iffy in GAME. (The only place you can buy it here in the UK.)

Well, it makes sense. I remember reading that the first Mass Effect pushed the limits of it's DVD capacity, even with it's barren planet surfaces. Can't wait to see what's in store for us in these 9 gigabytes.

Actually, that's getting close to 18 gigabytes of data...Xbox games are burned onto Dual-Layer discs [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD#Dual-layer_recording] (same as most movie DVDs). I don't know exactly how it works, but there's basically another layer of data storage, which approximately doubles the storage capacity. So yeah...gonna be a long game, that's for sure.

OT: this game looks freaking insane!
im annoyed that i have to finish the first one 2 more times before christmas so as to set up the story for my 3 shepards! XP
