Celebrity Endorsements They Wish They Could Take Back

I'm not sure I like the amount of enthusiasm which Phil Hartman exudes in a commercial for an Atari game. I love it.

Actor Phil Hartman went on to bigger and brighter things before his untimely demise, but his best celebrity endorsement wasn't for Wilson Countersink Flanges [http://snltranscripts.jt.org/92/92oflanges.phtml], it was for Activsion's Ice Hockey on the Atari 2600. Ice Hockey was released in 1981, so this commercial was probably first seen in that year.

The shopkeeper strings Hartman along like he's a Stradivarius, inciting a impressively crazy outburst of desire for the pixelated hockey violence. You have to respect Hartman for putting the extra juice into his performance, especially the title card at the end where it sounds like he's shilling the game with his last mortal breath.

Also, I'm glad that game stores have upgraded over the years. I'd rather purchase games from a GameStop, if you can believe it, than go into the wood-paneled meth-lab hole in the ground that this guy appears to be operating. Sadly, that is how most games stores actually appeared in the 80s but, as with the Holocaust and Showgirls, I don't like to remember the horrors I've witnessed.

Hartman is not the only celebrity to have sold games back in the day. Pre-scandal Pete Rose and Mr. Chicken himself, Don Knotts, also got in the fun in this 1978 gem for the Atari system. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGowtEkzKHk]

Then there's Jack Black, before he got the guitar and the extra 200 pounds, selling America on Pitfall in the first segment of this ad [http://fuzzymemories.tv/screen.php?c=2582&p=1&m=pitfall].

The lesson here? Appearing in a game commercial will make your acting career soar to new heights! Either you will be murdered by your wife, you will be disgraced by your profession in a gambling scandal or you'll be an unfunny fat dude with an equally fat untalented friend. I shudder to think of what will become of Mr. T [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3_hpCOGxDg].

Mr. T's got one of the cleanest celebrity records I've ever seen. Providing he doesn't finally fall off the deep end and start the wife beating, hard drinking segment of his career, I think he can spare a video game commercial or two. For what it's worth, I absolutely loved his commercials.

Dammit, I miss Phil Hartman. The guy was a comic genius and the glue that held SNL together. This commercial was just over the top crap though.

I myself enjoyed those, and was sad when I couldn't give my night elf a mohawk at the time. Hadn't found any mohawk grenades up to when I had to suspend my account, but watching Mr. T's toon chase a gnome through Goldshire, and throwing a grenade at it, is an image I will cherish, with many lulz. :D
I, too, remember that Pitfall commercial, though not the Phil Hartman one. Thanks for sharing these, Greg. Cookie for you.

Hey what....Mr.T`s commercials are super cool :D
They wouldnt hire him if he was a lame broke ass actor or something. I mean he is endorsing WoW (100mil a month franchise) and Snickers....thats big stuff.
But seriously i wanna see Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Hugh jackman doing a WoW commercial . . . .and then watch as the whole world turns wow o_O
Or those gays from Twilight :D whooo boy talk about girls in MMORPGs D:

Has Gary Coleman ever done a video game ad? His career pretty much went to shit after Diff'rent Strokes was cancelled.

Woah, I just had a sudden rush of ideas of how to get a Twilight MMO to work.

I could be rich, if I actually knew how to put it all together...

I don't believe there were any aired ads, but he was in, and did some promotional work for Postal 2.
