Final Fantasy XIII: Rated T For Sideboob

What does Square-Enix's Final Fantasy XIII do to earn its "T" rating by the ESRB? It shows sideboob - oh, and there's some violence too, I guess.

In case you haven't heard, Square-Enix's long-awaited Final Fantasy XIII is rated "T for Teen" by the ESRB. This isn't exactly surprising, considering that every other Final Fantasy since FF7 has been rated "T for Teen" as well, falling neatly into that spectrum where it's a bit too advanced for the kiddos but not as gory or over-the-top to warrant an "M for Mature." So while the rating itself isn't surprising, Siliconera [http://www.siliconera.com/2009/12/17/final-fantasy-xiii-rated-t-for-violent-content-and-side-boobage/] noted a very-slightly-spoileriffic in-depth explanation of the game's rating:

[blockquote] Players assume the roles of heroes caught in a war between two opposing forces in this fantasy role-playing game. Players travel between the planet Pulse and a moon named Cocoon to engage in missions for magical beings called the "fal'Cie. Missions involve battling enemy soldiers and creatures by using melee attacks (swords, knives, staffs, etc.), firearms, and magic spells (lightning strikes, fire blasts, etc.).

Combat is executed through a modified turn-based system in which players select various commands from a menu while freely moving one of three heroes through the battlefield. Players can also summon elemental creatures to battle an assortment of goblins, golems, zombies, wolves, frogs, bats, and robots.

The game's cinematic cutscenes contain the most intense depictions of violence: machine gunfire from space ships strafe human characters below; humans and robotic soldiers exchange gunfire-aboard vessels, on the ground; a slow-motion gunfight depicts the cracked lens of a robot shot in the head by two semi-automatics.

Cutscenes occasionally depict female characters dressed in revealing outfits: Holographic dancers-clad in bikini tops, skimpy leotards, and backless chaps-glide above the city during a festivity performance; flying-motorcycle models wear skin-tight tops that expose deep cleavage. And during one elaborate sequence, a female character transforms from a crystal statue back to her human form-sparkle effects, camera panning, and shimmering lights partially obscure the nude character, though side-portions of her breasts are visible (fleeting-one-to-two seconds). The game also contains the expletives "a*s," "damn," and "hell"; however, it is the violent content, the suggestive themes that account for the Teen rating.[/blockquote]

So there you have it, folks: Sideboob and cutscene-specific violence as well as a smattering of not-really-that-naughty language. When it hits North America and the EU in March, remember to keep your non-teenage kids away at all costs.

Reading these ERSB reports is akin to reading hilarious deconstructions of rap lyrics - they are just so matter of fact and bizarre, you can't help but laugh at them.

Silly Funk, sideboob doesn't begin with T! That'd be Tsideboob, which would still probably sound the same, but perplex everyone at the dictionary making organisations.

The game also contains the expletives "a*s," "damn," and "hell"
'Hell' is expletive? Seriously?

So why was ass censored and not damn? Ass is an appellation for a donkey, and it means stubborn, hard headed, ornery, etc... They might as well have changed the other 'swears' to darn and h e double hockey sticks.

I actually like that SE keeps their FF at T or under. If they make it M, it'll probably be like Gears of Fantasy which would ruin the art styles.

So what? All Final Fantasies released in the last 10 years got the Teen rating. Yuna had a ton of Sideboob in Final Fantasy X. X-2 has you playing as Rikku, who wore a g-string bikini and hot pants in the entire game. She gave you side, top and underboob. While the ladies of FFXII did not give a ton of side boob, some of their pictures looks like they did. Especially Ashe and you have to be really looking to see that.

Who cares anyway? Most of the audience are past the point of caring about trying to find sideboob.

So.. Does that really matter? It's still a long stretch from what previous Final Fantasy games had in them. FFXIII is a vast improvement. Why can't a role-playing, story-telling game have more mature sequences, seeing as it really shouldn't be a "kids game" anyway.

Even so, whoever the source is from, they need to get their facts straight. Pulse and Cocoon are ON the same planet. Not a planet and moon. It's a floating city ON the planet.

"Some 1,300 years ago, a fal'Cie constructed a paradise for humanity: the shell-like city of Cocoon, which floats high above the surface of the world known as Pulse. Both Pulse and Cocoon are maintained by their own fal'Cie. Cocoon's fal'Cie created life forms and machines for its inhabitants to use, and humanity flourished. Over time, the people of Cocoon began to fear for the safety of their world, and they worried that it would be cast down from the sky into the hell that they saw Pulse to be."

Way to report the news, guys. Grow up, Final Fantasy really isn't a children's game. It's better off mature.

Why is this breaking news? Hasn't every Final Fantasy game since uh... VII been rated 'T'?

Yep. Seems that way. Besides I never really thought of the Final Fantasy series as being kids games anyway.

The bland way they try to describe it makes it funnier.

I just hope they dont try to sell it on it.
