Guildcafe Gets Investment

IDG Ventures Boston invests in a guild community website.

Game community website GuildCafe Entertainment Inc. has raised an undisclosed sum of venture capital from IDG Ventures Boston. Guildcafe offers users to host guild websites and network with players of similar games centered around the massively-multiplayer role-playing genre. The influx of cash will help increase staffing and management to add functionality to the site.

"GuildCafe is becoming the place where players start their day. Before jumping into an online game, they'll stop by to find out what their friends are doing, learn about new content or plan their fun for the evening. It's our goal to create a community that places players at the center of the online gaming universe," said Jon Radoff, President and Chief Executve Officer of GuildCafe Entertainment Inc.

Jon Karlen of IDG Ventures Boston and now a member of GuildCafe's Board of Directors, added, "In contrast to older communities that treat gamers as consumers of editorial content, GuildCafe is enabling new forms of interaction, driven by players and the groups they belong to. Through its early lead, management experience and deep understanding of players, we believe GuildCafe is in a unique position to redefine the gaming media market."

I thought this looked pretty interesting so I signed up about a week ago but everything was pretty confusing with the layout. After a few days my virus checker updated and recognized a keylogger and a virus or some sort that originated from this site. I have no idea how and I didn't even think that was possible. Now I can't get rid of this stupid message and I'm scared to death my WoW account was hacked that I'm changing my password every 5 minutes. I'm just going to reformat today and hope for the best. I hope my experience can save some others from these problems.

I can honestly tell you that wherever that Trojan/Keylogger came from, it did NOT originate from GuildCafé and I'd appreciate if you didn't spread this rumour. There are over 15000 members at GuildCafé (I myself being a member for 7 months or so now), including the Community Managers from Tabula Rasa and Warhammer Online AND the CEO of an upcoming MMO company. Don't you think they and I would know if we had been infected by the site?

A much more logical explanation would probably be your own viewing of 'dangerous' sites. I'd suggest you avoid 'tending to your needs' if you need 'assistance'.

Also, for your own protection I suggest the use of Mozilla Firefox 2.* with the NoScipt and Adblock AddOns.

Thanks.

how odd, i have been part of the site since Nov 06 and not gotten anything bad. I run Norton weekly, and Adaware on an irregular basis and have not had a single incident of malware.

much like Grarghsies says, use Firefox, stay away from Porn sites, and any gold selling sites.

Odd indeed. I've been a part of GC since it was a glimmer in Tarinth & Roxi's eyes and it's not once given me a fit on either Firefox or IE. Marush, I can tell you for a fact, especially having known some of the staff there for years, what you caught wasn't from hanging out on that site, maybe some other seedier joint ;)

Also, there's a steady stream of improvements and updates to the site. You can always post a suggestion for improvements on the site, you'll be listened to at least.

Finally, what's your name on GC? I looked for Marush but couldn't find you - would be more than happy to chat with you a bit more about your experiences and maybe assist you with your GC related issues - I won't of course be doing desktop support ;)
