Nielsen: 52% of US PSP Owners Are Female

It looks like PSPz just might be for girlz after all.

Remember how we mercilessly mocked the "OMG Girlz Play Games Too!" ad campaign [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93614-Sony-Reminds-Us-OMG-Girls-Sorry-Girlz-Play-Games-Too] for the PSP? Well, it turns out that even though the ad campaign was still really, really awkward and dumb, there may have been some truth in it: Demographics research giant Nielsen Media Research found that 52% of all PSP owners in the United States were female.

It's an interesting statistic, and not one all that vulnerable to the counterpoint oft-used by people who don't know what they're talking about when faced with similarly high numbers on, say, the DS - Oh, girls only like it for cute games like Nintendogs! The PSP is traditionally seen as more of a "hardcore" gaming machine than its Nintendo-made rival, particularly since the UMD movie scene is pretty dead at this point.

Incidentally, the Wii has a 49% female owner-base in the United States, Nielsen found, while 44% of "active gamers" (users who play at least one hour per week) were also female. This may not be surprising given the increasing prevalence of gaming devices in the States: Nielsen's numbers also show that 79% of US households have "a device they specifically use for gaming," and 54% own a handheld or console - so we aren't just talking Peggle, either.

Of these consoles, Nielsen found that the Xbox 360 was the most played with 23.1% of total minutes played, knocking last year's champion - the PS2 - to second place with 20.4%. Coming up third was the Wii, with 19.0% of all minutes played, knocking a hole in the "but nobody plays the Wii!" arguments all-too-prone on gaming forums.

So yes, a majority of PSP owners are female. But I still can't help but feel they don't really want the Lilac PSP. I could be wrong, though.

I had a pink GBA once, that was awesome and it is funny I have yet to see a single girl using a PSP. but I am in Canada so the statistics are probably different here.

You crazy Canadians, doing Canadian things. I bought my girlfriend at the time a DS, thinking she wanted to the red one. She returned it for a pink one.

On Topic: Numbers never actually persuaded anyone to believe anything. People are still going to continue to spout the same crap over and over again. Companies are still going to try to make games specific to girls which is mostly an insult, the games overly targeted towards adolescent males might not get much of an audience outside their target group but there has to be something bringing the other groups out to game, and I doubt it is the future hope of games targeted towards them.

Not really surprised, but that does mean that 48% of PSP owners are male, which is still a pretty decent percentage. If it was closer to 80-20 either way then it'd be shocking, but a 52-48 split isn't exactly a big deal. Interesting, but not a big deal.

How did they calculate these numbers? Because if they did it by letting everyone vote through the internet what their sex was, I'm thinking that maybe there might be faults with these statistics. Just saying: There are some creepy dudes out there.

I wouldn't consider "users who play at least one hour a week" to be "active gamers". If you spent a few minutes a day on flash games you'd make that total.

People actually have a PSP? Haha I kid I kid. But in all honesty, I've never seen anyone with a PSP around here.

I guess the presence of all the good games on the DS outweighed all the softcore ones. Honestly, if you have to pick one for games, DS is the way to go. I hardly have any games for my PSP. I guess girls are buying it because it can store music, photos, stuff like that... even though I think the new DSi's can do that stuff...but w/e.

52% of them are girls?

Wow, I didn't know there were enough PSP owners to even calculate a percentage that isn't 0%

I once saw a great deal on a Hannah Montana edition PSP from NewEgg(like $120, now gone), but I couldn't bring myself to own a lilac psp with flowers and "Hannah Montana" all over it.

The lilac PSP insults my intelligence as a female. I think the ad was more toward the parents of girls who think the PSP is too rough or something.

Ask most girls who play games and I'll bet that Hanna Montana: The Game is not something they would willingly play.
