CES: Meet Alienware's Newest Tiny God of Laptops

Meet the Dell Alienware M11X: Its screen is under 11", its price tag is under $1000, and it can run Crysis [http://www.amazon.com/Crysis-Pc/dp/B000PS2XDO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1280953699&sr=8-1-catcorr] on high at 50 FPS.

I remember back in college, my friend Nick had an Alienware gaming laptop that he used to play the high-end games of the time like M11X [http://www.amazon.com/Far-Cry-Jewel-Case-Pc/dp/B000EGOGAA/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1280953728&sr=1-1], the antithesis of Nick's old behemoth: It's the size of a Netbook, but it has "the graphics power of a 15-inch laptop."

With six hours of battery life (2 of hardcore gaming with a secondary Nvidia GPU that can be switched on without having to reboot), this little beast can run Crysis at 50 FPS on high at 720p resolution, and Call of Duty at 30 (CoD more taxing than Crysis, huh?). It also won't break the bank if you decide to pick it up, reportedly costing less than $1000 - supposedly with specs maxed - when it hits stores within a month or so.

Gizmodo has a hands-on [http://gizmodo.com/5442786/alienware-m11x-hands+on-fast-ride-in-a-short-machine] of the little beast - as well as some actual images of it being held and running, and not in a black featureless void with a simulated screenshot - from CES, and it sounds pretty killer, with ports and slots that belie its teeny tiny little framework.

Oops, will you look at that - I dropped my old laptop off the balcony down two stories onto concrete. Clumsy me. Guess I'm in the market for a new one!

Why would I want a laptop the size of a netbook though? I personally like to have a decent sized screen and buttons that don't evade my fingers. Also, I bet this is just like other Alienware products- they start at reasonable prices, but in order to get all of the bells and whistles that allow it to run Crysis, you have to add about $500-1000 to the price tag.

Word is that the sub-$1000 price is specs maxed.

If this can run most games well then, fuck it, it's time to get a new laptop.

Though the small screen slightly upsets me.

Damn, just when I was thinking about buying that ASUS netbook Alienware has to do this.

Guess I'll have to take it off my wishlist.

I'd just end up hooking a regular-size keyboard and maybe - just maybe - also a screen up to it.

So what's the point, really?

Although I use an Alienware gaming laptop and I'm really happy with it, so it's good they went for a price you would find on actual Earth-made commodities.

Specs maxed for under $1000? For that price I think you can bear with a small screen- or just buy a desktop screen and use that...

Hmm, I think I may give up my desktop and do just that!

...what?

Alienware is selling something for under a thousand dollars... and it's decent quality?

Someone call Los Angeles Airport, please, and ask them if they'd spotted any pigs flying through their airspace recently.

I agree, small keyboards are a bane of laptops, and if this thing is only 11" wide, there's no way I could game like that.

I don't think my hands will fit onto the keypad. I don't like mini laptops. They are fiddly, don't have disk drives, easily lost and are just too small to have decent games on the screen (that i can actually see and play with ease).

Ya I'm happier with my laptop right now. It's an 18.2" screen and can play anything I've put it to so far, I'm not concerned about it

Can I have the address of anyone that's going to buy this.

And if you could leave the door open a crack; that'd be great.
