Sony Delays Motion Control 6 Months

Sony announced that it will not launch its motion control until the fall, only a short time before the launch of Microsoft's Natal.

Kazuo Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, indicated in a statement that the delay may have to do with the desire to launch with a strong line-up of games to take advantage of the new control scheme. Sony reinforced that the Motion Controller still has no official name, despite truly outrageous rumors of it being called Arc [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96690-Sony-Motion-Controller-Gets-a-Truly-Outrageous-Name]. Along with the Dual Shock, Sony wants the Motion Controller to be the "de facto" user input device of the PlayStation 3.

"We have decided to release the Motion Controller in fall 2010 when we will be able to offer an exciting and varied line-up of software titles that will deliver the new entertainment experience to PS3 users, " said Hirai. He went on:

We will continue to work to have a comprehensive portfolio of attractive and innovative games for the Motion Controller, not only from SCE Worldwide Studios but also from the third party developers and publishers, whom we have been working closely with. We look forward to soon unveiling the exciting software line-up that further expand and define the PS3 platform as the ultimate entertainment system for the home.

With Natal slated for a holiday 2010 release, Sony seems to be cutting it close by shooting for fall 2010. In any case, this holiday season will be the proving ground for the future of motion controlled videogames, with consumers having the choice of 3 different technologies in Sony's Motion Control, Microsoft's Natal and the Wii.

I say the three should duke it out Iron Chef style, with gamers playing each of them for an hour to see which is better. What do you say, Chairman? "Whose control scheme will reign supreme?"

That delay is outrageous! Truly truly outrageous!

No, I will never let that drop. Besides, I'm not too excited for all this motion control stuff, but we'll see how it all pans out I guess.

Oh, and just wanted to mention;

That made me 'lol', literally.

Man that little pink ball thing looks... weird. If sony was smart, they would add some batteries and make it vibrate, sell it in sex shops.

Expand the market beyond the two people who lament about having to reach all the way for the wiimote to turn on their Wii when they want to game with motion control.

Whats next, will I be unable to play my PC or consoles without flailing my arms in an insane manner. I trained my hands through years of gaming, now I have to flail my arms... I refuse!
This. Come on guys, whyyyy? I know you want to appeal to a bigger market, but i'll be dammed if this bullshit comes to rule the market. It's interesting and all, but, i don't really care, a Wii is good enough for me. PS3, controller. 360, controller. Wii, stick. That's nature.

Nintendo has pretty much monopolized everyone who has an open mind regarding motion controls. I feel that both this and Natal will be failures, possibly even to the point of Gizmondo-level failure. However, I find Natal to be interesting at least, while this is Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V of the Wii Remote with Motion+.

This would be great, maybe you could have some actual sword fighting games or something, or shoot just with something like this. I would be fine without game controllers, they do bad things to you're hands and sitting down all the time is very bad for you're health.

The contest is already over... Nintendo has already claimed victory; anything Sony does will be viewed as nothing short of a pale ripoff.
Yeah they won the "Pop teh baloons SD circus game" award. Or and there's wii fit! So you can act like a fool in front of a video game console, instead of the beefcaeks at teh gym!

Seriously though? What did they win? I really don't understand the fanboyism for consoles. It's like if you bought the "right" one you, yourself gain it's power as being part of a collective status quo of supernerds.

Anyway, I'm sure all the motion controllers will be fun for 3 months before the support dies for them because people lose interest in motion controls. I would love a good sword fighting game that actually worked. Or I can just pick up my equipment and go fencing.

Simulating fantasy movement with real movement, I predict, will never be as popular as just using a controller.
