3D N64 Videos Give Glimpse Into 3DS Potential

Did you want to see a 3D Star Fox, but couldn't get to E3? Well this might be the next best thing.

The Nintendo 3DS is getting a lot of people very excited, but its most compelling feature - a glasses-free 3D display - is pretty much impossible to show without the device actually in your hand. In an attempt to address this problem, a Swiss 3DS blog [http://nintendo3dsblog.blogspot.com/] has created a collection of videos of classic N64 titles in 3D, so those of us who couldn't make it to Los Angeles last month can get an idea of what to expect.

The videos include the intros of Star Fox 64, as seen above, and Ocarina of Time [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrMq0jqLcSA ] and gameplay from Mario Kart 64 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKDb0rz25Ew ]. Getting the 3D effect requires the old school red and blue 3D glasses, and sadly the new style glasses that you might have from watching Avatar or something similar won't work. There is the option to change it to "cross-eyed" mode in the 3D settings though, so don't be too dismayed if you don't have a pair lying around. Unfortunately, YouTube's 3D player can't be embedded at the moment, so what you're seeing up there is the cross-eyed mode. To watch it in slightly less eye-straining 3D, you need to head to YouTube itself.

What's remarkable is how well suited to 3D most of the videos are, with lots of things coming straight at the camera. It's almost as if Nintendo had planned this all along.

Is that video supposed to be comparing something?

Apparently they've built 3D tech into all of their stuff for the past 15 years or something, just in case they could get the tech right.

How do I switch them to cross eyed mode? I'm really good at doing that (I can do it on will and my friends always hate how fast I can do stereograms) but I don't see how to set the video to that mode.

edit: oh ffs, there's just a button down on the right of the video lol.

For those of you wondering how to "see" the cross eyed video, it's basically a stereogram, you see it the same way.

I do actually have a pair of old school red and blue glasses, and i'm not really seeing any sort of "improvement" in the nintendo videos. I don't know if i'm doing something wrong, but the discolored image only obscures some details and doesn't add much. That's probably not going to be the case with an actual 3DS, but as far as the demonstration goes, i'm not impressed.

Now since we're on the subject of3d videos, i did found a 3d video of a cat in related videos, now that really blew my freaking mind. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89cGA4-yPRw&feature=related

Correct almost, Gamecube had it, just in case.

I suppose we have to wait for someone to actually show up with a 3DS near your house so you can give it a try. I sure do want to try this out for a day or two!
I bet you the big store chains will have 3DS demo units, like they did with the DS/Lite. Otherwise non gamey people will never get it.

It will be better than that because games will be actually designed to use 3D fuctionally, but it's a reasonable indication of simple aesthetic 3D.

At least with the crossed-eye technic the 3D effect doesn't appear to be very strong. I doubt this is a really good comparison for the upcoming 3DS...

Designed to use 3D? Nope, not really. It's a gimmick that 3D stuff there. There is no game mechanics which really can take use of such a gimmick. It's good for making money but for nothing useful for actual games.

EDIT: You can make game mechanics for 3D... but only if you cripple down (artificially limiting) existing game mechanics. But that's not a step forward but backward.

It'd be nice to actually get a good look at the 3D images without the glasses like you're suppose to be able to. But I guess that's the risk Nintendo decided to run when it came to marketing/advertising.

Wish I could see those 3D effects on the youtube video... sigh... my kingdom for the crappy glasses I usually threw away.
