3DS Bashing

So I've just been having a lazy Sunday afternoon - alternating between my favourite book (the Histories) and my 3DS and well after several hours of fun I just started wondering, why do so many people flame the 3DS?

I mean I can understand it if you're one of the few people who can't see in 3D, that's fine. And if your one of the people (like Yahtzee) who can't use it without getting motion sickness / headaches, that's fine to, but as a portable gaming device, I can't see the criticisms extending much past that.

People often say "Yeah the 3D is just a gimic" and well yeah it is, and the 3DS is the only thing that offers that gimic, and it's a good gimic. The animations in Samurai Warriors is simply outstanding and it doesn't disappoint in the gameplay either. - Yeah maybe some games employ the 3D as a mechanic in itself (I'm looking at you, whatever the new Mario World is called) and that can be a bit lame, but that's the game's fault not the console's.

People like to complain about the price as well, well I got it after the price cut and considering the good and growing library of games, the cool graphics and well implemented wi-fi I say it warrants the price. Especially when you consider how much people are paying for the Vita (which Sony will probs stop producing games for after a year or so, just like with the PSP).

Finally here's a pretty good library of fun games with good graphics, so it's not like you can't get your value for money. The Ocarina of Time, Samurai Warriors and Mario Kart 7 are my personal faves.

So yeah, do you agree, do you think the levels of 3DS bashing are pretty unwarranted and probably aimed more at the fact that it embraced the new '3D revolution' rather than any of its own actual short comings?

Tl;Dr The 3DS is actually pretty good, do you think it deserves the hate it gets?

Yes, it deserves it. Whether or not it's a "good" gimmick is subjective. Plenty of people think it's BS meant to try to squeeze more money out of people who have to buy everything nintendo puts out. Anyone who still has a functioning DS will have to make an effort to justify the new one. And the library is pathetic. Rebuying old Nintendo 64 games in headache-inducing pseduo-3D doesn't make for a compelling value calculation. Nintendo's first party titles aren't as good as they used to be, and are far too tied up in gimmicks that they forget to actually make them good.

So no. The 3DS detractors are completely warranted in their opinions, and your claims that it embraced some BS "3D revolution" is BS marketroid speak. It's overpriced, underfeatured, and underperforming.

I agree with the above post.

The 3DS is following Nintendo's traditional outline of "Buy this, their isn't many games out for it yet, and most out so far are just remakes of games you have already played! But that cool with you fanboy right?".

No it's not alright.

This may have been cool, if this was still the late 80's early 90's, when you and Sega were the only real competitors for home console video-game dominance. Releasing a console with strong games nowadays just doesn't cut it anymore. Microsoft did it right with Halo and Gears of war, and Sony has always released strong starting titles for their consoles.

They also need to learn about 3rd party developers.

Jack will not buy one over the bricking nonsense.

Basically, I was tempted to get one of these and branch out from my having bought into Sony ever since the first Playstation. Since they've done alright for me, you can understand why I'd keep buying. (However, this is not the case with the Vita. Just pointing that out.) Anyway, the 3DS looked interesting to me...and then I heard about the whole DRM shit. Lemme explain something, I am pretty much never planning to screw around with any of my systems that would have cause for paranoid delusions about piracy. But having MENTIONED paranoid delusions, I should point out that it would be easy to render a product I got useless for NO reason, because they THINK something that is wrong.

Because of that, Nintendo basically cheated itself out of ever getting my support for anything.

I've had my 3DS since day 1 and ever since I finished Pokemon Black and Zelda it's just sat there collecting dust. I may pick up a new pokemon game, I wouldn't have to be swayed to get a Majora's Mask rehash, but these days I'm finding it harder and harder to justify paying for 3DS games when that could be going onto a game that I will spend more than a few hours on, or you know to something I actually need like bills and food.

I lost interest in Nintendo since the WII came out and dropped support for the gamecube.
Anyway the 3ds is just a 300 euro's/dollar (whatever) dustcollector with a gimmick if you ask me. It's librabry of games is kinda ridiculous for as far as I know with already a six or sevent version of Ocarina Of Time.

I'm having a LOT of fun with mine because I try to see "fun games" as "fun games" and nothing more, not as "rehashes" or "bids to part me with my money" or whatever. I try to see "consoles" as "the conduits for my gaming experience" and nothing more, as well, so strange though I find the Vita's back touchpad, that won't stop me from owning one because the good software will justify its inclusion. I find that when I apply labels and stipulations to the reasoning behind what I like, I become hypocritical whenever the exceptions crop up, which is more often than not.

I still don't get the "rehashes" complaint with the 3DS. The way I see it is that everything is out for your money in some fashion, period, whether it's a new IP or a port. I'm sick of hearing about Nintendo being "out for your money" with remakes, as opposed to whatever the alternative is. What IS the alternative for someone trying to survive in a competitive industry anyway? Doing it solely for the "art?"

Or those other humble grassroots indie gamers that are so nice with their...retro-pixel flavored 2D platformers and such. That's not a sure-fire way to make a cheap game and make a lot of money in return by cashing in on anyone's nostalgia, right? Couldn't be, they're humble indie devs!

My point is, everyone does the rehashing thing in some degree, and we all fall for it in some way. Every last human being has a price that needs only be named for them to cave. If the 7th OoT rerelease didn't hook you into a 3DS, the playing Persona 4 or FFX again will probably hook you to a Vita. If not that, then maybe you're into the retro aesthetic and will buy 8 bit indie games cause GET OFF MY LAWN.

If not those, then which would sell you on a "rehash?" Planescape? the original Deus Ex? Perhaps Morrowind or Baldur's Gate? Something will, you just don't know it yet. Then what'll happen to the whole "3DS is stupid because rehashes" thing? Are they so bad now that you've found one that appeals to you?

That's why I hate generalizations of that nature, I guess.

I went to a 3DS after using the original, I guess you could call it Fat DS and am enjoying it a lot. Recently I've been playing the hell out of Super Street Fight IV, though I'm terrible at it, Seth is kicking my ass even on easiest, damn insta-blocking. That and Star Fox.

I've had 0 problems with it. The games are fun, the 3D is awesome and the Augmented Reality cards you get with it are damn entertaining.

Personally, I'm holding out on a 3DS because by the time they've released enough games that I want to justify a purchase, the second iteration of the 3DS will probably be out and will have fixed most of the problems with the original.

Since it's my first Nintendo handheld and I got it for 130 euro's (which is fairly cheap) I'm content. And with games like Chrono Trigger (DS), Castlevania Order of Ecclesia (DS), Advance Wars Dark Conflict (DS), Pokemon Black (DS), Tales of the Abyss (3DS) and soon MGS 3DS to keep me occupied, I see no reason not to be.

I've never seen the point of the whole 3d thing. It seems like it keeps coming back every couple of years, then disappears because everyone realizes they don't care. The 3DS is annoying to me, I'd rather just use a DS. Couple that with its lack of games...No thanks.

I'll probably end up getting it, if for no other reason than Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance. Then I'll probably buy a few of the DS games I always wanted to play, like Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles whatever, KH 358/2, maybe a Pokemon game or two.

As for whether or not it deserves the hate, I dunno. This will be my first Nintendo handheld since the GBA. I think it is a bit silly of them to release it without any good release titles, but for me that works out just fine because I can get one used or at a lowered price and I still haven't missed much on it yet.

Though I must say, at least they're not total assholes like Sony and Microsoft and actually make their stuff backwards compatible.

Too me it targets certain people and personally it doesn't target me. I don't hate the 3DS it's just something I don't find the need to get since my DS without the 3D is just fine for me. More games would need to come out for it to even have me consider buying it. I just don't want to buy it for a Zelda or Mario game.

In my eyes, the 3DS fails for the exact same reason the PSP failed; if you have the foresight to include 1 analog stick, why the hell would you not include 2 analog sticks?

3D is already cool to hate, and it's especially cool to hate Nintendo. Even though the 3D works and the games are still brilliant.

I got one for Christmas. Had a blast playing Super Mario 3D Land, but it's been collecting dust since. If they churn out a good Zelda game (new or Majora's Mask remake) I will buy it. I knew from the get-go it'd be another Mario/ Zelda machine, but I have no qualms with that.

Well it basically has no games, the few it has being remakes, or further entries into very predictable series. That's really my only problem.
I don't regret getting one but I'm not going to claim it's amazing. However I seem to be immune to the sickness, and Ocarina of Time looks gorgeous.

Also the battery life is a bit crap.

Nintendo rewarded me for buying it when it came out, but obviously hate me since they decided to release a special zelda version

I do think that it will lose most of its problems as more games come out. Super Smash Bros will be amazing, but it's most of year now since it came out, and only near the end of last year did some good new stuff come out, even if not particularly groundbreaking.

Well your problem is you're being upset by subjective things like 3D being a good gimmick as you say. I think 3D in anyform is dumb, just layers of things moving isn't 3D it's dumb and isn't worth the extra cost.

Why I think the 3DS is stupid and specifically Zelda OoT is you have a large group of people who for years are spitting out graphics don't matter, then Nintendo do some minor touch ups to Zelda and fans run out and buy it like nuts. Apparently graphics do matter it's just when it's nintendo making graphics.

Personally I don't care for system bias, I like games not the systems or companies. Why do people dislike the 3DS? Low battery life, dumb 3D gimmick, it's getting lazy ports, basically everything their handhelds shouldn't have. Look at the GBA SP, I don't remember the last time I charged the damn thing.

I agree man, I like my 3DS.

I have enjoy playing my 3DS when I have the time, it has a lot of games I enjoy and the 3D can be pretty interesting sometimes (it's annoying to have on all the time though). I'm excited for the games that are coming out for it later too.

I can understand that it's not for everybody though, but it is a bit annoying that so many people like to just come on the internet and whine about it. Then again, I just hate hearing people complain no matter the context.
