3DS Sells 6 Million in Japan

3DS sales put the quirky handheld on par with its predecessor.

You've got to hand it to Nintendo; it knows how to make a system move. In spite of a lackadaisical launch, a controversial price cut [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/critical-miss/9062-The-Bad-News], and a slow burn on releasing AAA titles, the occasionally eye-straining handheld has sold over 6 million units in its native Japan. The system is not exactly flying off shelves like the Wii did many years before it, but its current rate of sales puts it roughly on par with the original DS, and miles ahead of the now-archaic GBA.

While some early 3DS critics decried it as the next Virtual Boy, it seems to be selling well enough for now. Bolstered by Mario and Zelda games with titles like Kingdom Hearts 3D and Luigi's Mansion 2 on the horizon, Nintendo's position as a strong - if not dominant - player in the handheld market is safe for the moment. Apple and Google still have their sights set on the mobile market, however, and who knows? I seriously was expecting to see that "IT MAKES MONEY!" picture of the 3DS. Well played, sir.

Well, I'm glad the 3DS was able to prove me wrong. Yeah, I still think it's a fancy DS with pop-up graphics, but I gotta admit that was a classy recovery by Nintendo.

Well, at least at this point, it's more appealing than the Vita. To me. Not gonna buy either, but ya know...

I'm waiting for a second generation of the 3DS to come out before I consider buying one. Just as I waited with the DS for the DS Lite. Not only will I get a superior console for a lower price by then but a larger library of games with those already established worthy of buying.

I like how some people consistently complain around here that Nintendo systems "have no new IPs" when when you list more than a dozen new IPs to come about since Pikmin, some of which STARTED on the 3DS, the same people who made the original accusation just try to say that "none of those count" on the basis that the new IPs aren't as big and popular as the storied ones.
