PSP Outsells DS In Japan

Figures from research firm Media Create [http://www.m-create.com/]show that Sony's PSP hand-held has outsold the Nintendo DS in Japan for the first time in over a year.

For the week ending September 16, the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII [http://www.google.ca/url?q=http://www.us.playstation.com/PSP&sa=X&oi=smap&resnum=1&ct=result&cd=1&usg=AFQjCNGnkvQiN6LOQgQy4VkGm7MJu5PZow].

The DS, meanwhile, took second place on the chart with 79,974 units sold. Nintendo has been struggling with sluggish sales in Japan this month, with weekly DS sales falling below 100,000 units for the first time this year in the first week of September. Sales for the past week had leveled off the slide experienced by the DS over the first half of the month, but are still well below expectations.

Rounding out the week's sales chart in Japan are the Nintendo Xbox 360 [http://www.wii.com]continues to languish in console purgatory with sales of 1,243 units, but it did manage to beat out the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube, which sold 836 and 97 units respectively.

Do you think DS sales may be slowing in Japan because everyone in the country already has one?

That's a good question in fact. Let's see the shares from those +40 millions handheld sold...

Or... maybe there's no more plastic in this world.

Looking at the two, the DS probably has saturated Japan and I noticed that the PSP is getting better titles and games. So, now they have enough money to buy a PSP now...

you can only train your brain so much before you realise you could be having fun playing computer games.

as DS owners get smarter they realise the bad purchase they have made... the fatal flaw in nintendo's stratagy.

the same goes for the wii. by making gamers fit we will end up able to survive the harsh out door world and engage in non computer based physical activities reducing game time... Nintendo, you fools

I think it's more the first theory that everyone already HAS one. As far as the PSP getting good game titles, it's about time Sony realizes that if they want their consoles to sell they need to publish good games. With the downfall of UMD movies, Sony has been forced to do the unthinkable: have their system play games.
