2K Games Posts BioShock 2 Multiplayer FAQ

2K Games has posted a BioShock 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Bioshock-2-Xbox-360/dp/B0016BVYA2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278970338&sr=1-1] multiplayer FAQ, revealing that the game will not support dedicated servers or LAN play but will use a "worldwide leaderboard" and matchmaking system to get players into the action as quickly as possible.

One of the big giggles in the upcoming BioShock 2 is the addition of multiplayer support, a feature that was absent in the original. Existing separately from the single-player story, the multiplayer action in BioShock 2 is set prior to the first game, with players as splicers fighting in a BioShock 2 Mulitplayer FAQ [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/conferences/e3_2009/6131-First-Look-BioShock-2-Multiplayer] has been posted at the Cult of Rapture that clears up a lot of lingering questions.

First and foremost, there will be no LAN or dedicated server support. "There is always a finite amount of time for the development of a game. Bringing multiplayer to BioShock was a daunting task between the tech (there was no multiplayer support in the codebase from the first game) and the expectations of the community," wrote 2K Games Community Manager Elizabeth Tobey, better known in some circles as 2K Elizabeth. "Either you try to do everything and so nothing feels finished or you focus your efforts to do a smaller number of things really well like an accessible online experience. We chose to spend the time we had creating a solid game foundation and unfortunately that did not include LAN play or dedicated servers."

It also doesn't include the option to kick jerks and troublemakers out of matches. "There is no kick option as we felt like it often leads to more unfair kicking than fair kicking," she explained. "We hope that because there are a variety of player goals and a multitude of options for ranking up and killing, the player will always feel like he or she is gaining something in a match with mean people and griefers. If you do get matched up with one of those people, please report it, leave that game, and we'll try to smooth out the online experience as best as we can."

Separate ranked and unranked multiplayer matches won't be supported; players will be able to create private, invitation-only matches for up to ten people as a way to practice without affecting online rankings but otherwise, everything will be recorded on a worldwide leaderboard, while an "in-game party system" will let players invite up to four others into a party for online matchmaking. "The matchmaking system will keep you and your friends together on the same team as long as you all want to play together and will attempt to find you players of similar skill for your party to play against," Tobey wrote. "We try to get you into a game as quickly as possible (since we know how much waiting really stinks), but match you up to people who are as close to your rank and skill as possible, with a certain amount of weighting to each factor, as well as requiring a low ping for those matched players."

The online support for BioShock 2 has always struck me as a tacked-on afterthought, a half-assed sop for gamers who reflexively believe that everything is better with multiplayer. On a personal level, then, I couldn't care less about any of this, but if I was interested in becoming a splicer-soldier, I think I'd be disappointed. Maybe it's a reflexive belief of my own - everything is better with dedicated server support - but if I'm going to play online, I want control over where I play, who I play with and, just as important, who I don't play with. This FAQ clears up a lot of questions, but it doesn't do much to sell me on the game.

BioShock 2 is slated for release on February 9 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

I agree that the multiplayer sounds like it has a poor framework. That being said, I doubt anybody really wants the game for the multiplayer alone, so it shouldn't be a deal-breaker.

The DRM, on the other hand...

If there is a New Game + that you do not have to purchase online, I am getting this. I do not care much about MP. I have MW2 for that.

Not sure why they bothered.

When playing Bioshock I never thought to myself "This game could really use multiplayer!".

I can understand this from a console point of view, but it's crap for PC.

I rarely see anyone from my area(or country for that matter) on XBL nor do I see what my latency happen to be at that moment. On PC I have atleast the option to choose where to play. But it seems choice is out of fashion.

Dedicated servers > Anything IW/2k/whoever can conjure up.

This sounds sweet. My money is either going to this, or Battlefield Bad Company 2.

Yeah, I doubt I'll actually be playing the MP. The engine, although good for SP tension, just moves too clunkily for good multiplayer. I also predict that it'll be very buggy, don't ask me why, it's just a hunch.
I'm in it for the singleplayer alone.
I agree 100%. I loved the first bioshock my first time through despite the controls feeling clunky. However, the controls, and the bullet sponge baddies, are what led me to trade in it since I couldn't imagine playing it a second time through. The shooting just never "felt" right.

I think (think) that I've read somewhere that they changed PC movement speed (amongst other things) on the multiplayer side to make it more compatible.

Ah well, its a handled by a seperate team (as most MP elements seem to be now) so I can't see its development affecting the singeplayer in any way.

I'm interested, but I still haven't gotten round to playing the first!

yeah it keeps messing up when i edit, to sum my opinion up its multiplayer sounds like its going to suck, GWFL is still horrible and a kicking option is always necessary, even while playing LAN.

This just makes the multiplayer sound more shit with lack of dedicated servers for PC and they didn't even have LAN!!! Most games will probably be a lag fest and no most people do not kick unfairly contrary to poular belief.

System Shock 2 had a tacked-on co-op mode forced into it through a patch at the publishers insistence too.

I believe the Multiplayer is a bonus. Also just so no one gets spoiled for the game like I did...DON'T read the synopsis on the figure box for the Big Daddy Delta Prototype. If your smart like I am(and I assume you are because I'm not a dick)then DON'T read that figure box synopsis.

Meh, not overly bothered by it. In fact, it's a good thing. Why? Because me and 3 friends all saved ~£10 (£20 for me as I'd get special edition ;) ) on it by getting the 4 pack from Steam.

We'll try Multiplayer, sure, but I doubt we'll stick with it. BioShock is a game I play for the Single Player, and I'm pretty sure that like GTA IV, I'll just ignore the MP.

It's sad, but this isn't all that surprising. I guess if this was a game where multiplayer mattered I'd be bothered by it.

The DRM is a problem though. I wanted the game on PC but I suppose I'll be rocking the box with it.

I wouldn't be getting this for multiplayer anyway, but GOD- no kicking?!?!?! What kind of fantasy dream world are they living in when they think they can take care of every griefer and general jerkass that plays online games? Give the power to the PLAYERS, and Dedicated servers! That way the admins that power goes to their heads can be avoided by playing on different servers, and the idiots can quickly be dealt with.
Example: I play on 1, maybe 2 TF2 servers, they have their own leaderboards, non-crazy admins, and friendly players.
I fire up MW2, and I am now playing with a bunch of people way out of my league, noobtubers, and others.
Give me dedicated servers and all the options that it comes with it.
Hence Why I am probably going to get BC2.
