DS and Wii Best Selling Nintendo Products Ever

The old guard of Nintendo hardware has passed the torch to a new generation.

What would you say are the best selling Nintendo products ever? If you'd had said the NES and the GameBoy, you'd have been right, a couple of months ago, but Nintendo has released new lifetime sales figured for its consoles, which show that the Wii and the DS are now the top dogs of Nintendo hardware.

The NES sold nearly 62 million units and the GameBoy sold over 118 million units, but as of December 2009 the Wii had sold over 67 million, becoming Nintendo's best selling home console, and the DS has sold more than 125 million, making it the best selling item that Nintendo has ever sold.

It's worth noting that the 'DS' includes the DS Phat, Lite, DSi and the new DSi LL/XL, but by the same token, 'GameBoy' includes the original, pocket and color, but whether or not it includes the GBA and it's various offshoots is unclear.

In the presentation where the sales figures were announced, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said "Needless to say, these are just two milestones of a larger journey in our efforts to reach the ultimate goal of bringing one home console for every household and one handheld for everyone."

I have two GBAs... neither of which work... I have to play Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars by sound alone...
I can actually do a bit. I memorised sound sequences...
Anyway, back to the point. I'll probably buy a DS to replace my GBA... and I'll need one to play Golden Sun 3 later this year.
Not too bothered about the Wii though.

Although I don't play my Wii much, the DS is the best handheld I've ever owned. I've owned a lot.

25 million more for the DS to go before it beats the PS2 though.

Not surprising.
There are a lot of games coming out this year, a few have already been released, so its a good time to have a Wii and a DS.

Rarely does a company blatantly admit their intentions of world domination. Kudos to you, Nintendo. Kudos.

Since both consoles have given me quite a long period of fun, especially the DS, I'm not surprised at all by these numbers.

The DS is great but the Wii needs more games. Where the hell is Zelda/Starfox/Pikmin? At least there's 2 Mario games...
Congratulations Nintendo. You earned it.

It being the best selling console ever is just the next step on the inevitable path to Nintendo going bankrupt and becoming a third party dev for MS and Sony. When they have sold twice as much as the NES and have 2 trillion dollars in the bank then they will really be in trouble! One step away from total failure!

I don't know exactly, but both smart people like Michael Pachter, some guy from IGN and that guy who hates Nintendo on games forums all agree so there is some consensus amongst the intelligentsia.

I have a feeling this is because the same people often bought the DS, DS light, the DSi, the DS phat, the DSwaffleiron, and the DS double HD-DVD widescreen.

Oh well. Here's hoping it actually gets games I'd like. Then I'd be glad to buy one. :/
