Get Hardcore With the Complete Game-Completion Marathon for Haiti

The Singapore-MIT Gambit Game Lab [http://gambit.mit.edu/] is holding a Complete Game-Completion Marathon to help raise money for earthquake relief in Haiti.

What, you may be wondering, is a Complete Game-Completion Marathon? Taking its cue from the Mass Effect 2 [http://desertbus.org/], the name of the game is to start it and beat it, all in one go.

The Stickhandlers, for instance, will play a full 82-game season, plus playoffs, in EA Sports' iPhone [http://www.ea.com/games/nhl-10] and has promised that she hasn't erased a single one since making the commitment.

Some teams have raised the bar further by setting certain goals they must strive to accomplish. Being Bad For Good, which will play both Mass Effect 1 and 2 from start to finish, requires specific Achievements to be made and, for the second game, must be played as a renegade female, while one of the Stickhandlers players plans to spend the entire 25 hours speaking Canadian.

Money raised by the effort will go to Partners in Health [http://www.standwithhaiti.org/haiti], a Boston-based agency which "works to bring modern medical care to poor communities in 12 countries around the world." Partners in Health has been in Haiti for more than 20 years and is now struggling to provide much-needed medical care in the wake of the devastating earthquake that hit the country in January.

The event will take place in the Gambit lab from February 26-28 and, for those who don't happen to be within comfortable traveling distance of cgcmarathon.org [http://web.mit.edu/].

Well, gaming for a good cause always sounds great! The Iphone challenge sounds interesting, if rather dull to me.

But what exactly is *speaking Canadian* mean, eh?

Well, this sounds cool, it's always nice to know that us gamers can stop screaming at each other over the internet, and come together and scream at eachother in the same room, while raising money for a good cause.

Speaking Canadian....Eh?

Hrm.

I might just go all Fable and complete TLC and FII as fast as I can. (Wait, nobody will sponsor me to do that...)

Because I'd only have to pay for 5 hours if you went as fast as you can.

Morrowind. THey would make a killing on Morrowind; especially if people donate so much per hour per game.

You know you can finish Morrowind in 7 minutes and 30 seconds?

Scary, isn't it.

But on topic, this is pretty awesome. I've been a supporter of Desert Bus since the first one and it's really genuinely lovely to see that the charitable spirit still exists.

I'd agree with you if TLC wasn't MASSIVE. Seriously. The thing is huuuuge.

I was assuming you were just gonna run the main questlines. And be evil so that saving people didn't matter.

That got my attention too. Basically he's saying he'll speak english for 25 hours. Reminds me of HP Barnum.

The big question I am wondering about here is who is deciding to donate money for this. Typically marathons have a sponsor, with people willing to pay the participants, who will usually be wearing a business logo or something while they perform whatever feat.

It says it's inspired by "Desert Bus For Hope", but that relied mostly on random web users and gamers that were willing to donate money, and it worked because it was using some fairly well known (to gamers at least) internet personalities who spent a lot of time goofing off, and doing requests for fans in exchange for donations.

In comparison I'm not sure if there is much appeal to watching someone play video games, even in record marathon sessions. Most of these people I have never heard of.

I could of course be wrong, or missing something mentioned in the article, but I'm not sure about this one. Noble effort... but I'll be surprised if it's a big success.

an excuse to beat a game... Hmm, chalk me up thre with devil may cry. I think I'd cry.

Really they should go with Demon's Souls, Ninja Gaiden Black, and Ghosts and Ghouls.

Yeah, see 'em finish THOSE. Without breaking a controller, cursing, and doing it in a timely fashion with less than 40 deaths.

And 100% F Zero GX

"I'm not your buddeh, guy!"
"I'm not your guy, friend!"
"I'm not your friend, buddeh!"
-for 25 hours? good day and good luck.
Seriously, Why Canadian? I know the voice actors and by extension Shepard is Canadian, but seriously, we talk almost exactly like Americans!...the ones not from the south anyway.

I think this is the best idea yet to help haiti. Maybe if we're luck y we'll see some injuries or some one will snap under the pressure.

Give them a JRPG and tell them to 100% it. THEY'LL DIE.
Have you actually checked the teams and their games? Fire Hose for Haiti [http://cgcmarathon.org//Fire_Hose_For_Haiti.html] plans on playing the original Final Fantasy. Sure it's not exactly as Japanesey as some of the later games in the series, but the fact that they're playing through with 4 white mages sounds interesting.

Also, they need 4 people to play through Shadow of the Colossus [http://cgcmarathon.org//Team_Funwolf.html]? WTF?
