Visceral: One Edgy Action Game Per Year

The general manager at Visceral Games, makers of Dante's Inferno [http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Space-Playstation-3/dp/B000X1TC0U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279056526&sr=1-1], said that the studio has learned a lot in its 9 years of existence, and that it wants to be known as the best at "edgy action" games.

Visceral Games, formerly known as EA Redwood Shores, proudly proclaims itself as EA's longest running studio. With some members having cut their teeth on the Road Rash games back in the day, the studio was tasked with some EA's most lucrative IPs and movie licenses. As part of EA's studio identity shakeup, Redwood Shores changed its name to Visceral and made Dead Space and this month's Dante's Inferno. Nick Earl is confident that his studio has found its stride and that they've now learned where they want to be, at the top of the mature-rated action game genre.

"The mission for this studio is nothing less than to be the leader of third-person linear action games," Earl told Gamasutra. He continued:

We've come through a lot of different games over the years, from James Bond to Lord of the Rings to Simpsons to Godfather to Tiger Woods -- which we did here for seven years.

But in all those years, we've kind of culled it down to the type of product that the studio really wants to build, and that is this kind of Mature-rated or edgy third-person linear action game. You know, we had such a big hit, and it was so critically well received, with Dead Space, and that was right when we changed our name to Visceral.

We feel like we were able to capture lightning in a bottle, which sort of rarely happens. This team feels -- the team here in the studio -- just feels a mission to establish this studio as one of the studios that really stands out and makes a difference and is sort of held as one of the top five or ten across the entire landscape.

As part of that, Visceral is aiming to release only one game a year. "What I've learned being general manager of the studio for the past nine years is you can overload a studio," he said. "'Less is more.' I know it sounds kind of trite, but we really believe that. We've really taken that on board here. What we put out, we want to put out at the absolute highest quality mark. We don't need to do three of those a year. One [game per year] is plenty, if we continue to drive that kind of quality here."

Part of this transformation comes from Earl and Visceral Games, but it also seems to be a philosophy change at Electronic Arts. In the past, the huge game publisher was accused of just throwing a studio at an IP to make the game. That's changed now, according to Earl. "The notion of just 'backing up the bus,' we like to call it, I think that's pretty much gone," said Earl. "We just don't do that anymore."

I never thought I'd hear game designers describe making a game as 'backing up the bus,' but it does make a certain amount of sense.

Incoming Edge Games lawsuit.
Gah! I thought I'd get in there first!

Oh well...

I reckon if Edge tries anything, EA will finally bury them.

Little typo.

OT: Sounds good to me, I'm not a big fan of their games, but I can appreciate good games when I see 'em. I hope this philosophy works well for them.

It's hard to take anything that Visceral does/says seriously, after Joystiq's treatment of them. I can hear this "edgy action" nonsense being mocked already, and it is glorious.

Meh, I'm not interested much in this genre anyway, and if they're going to insist on repeatedly making games in a single category I'm going to insist on playing something else.

Well, they found their nitch. Now let's see if they can hold onto it.

Let's see if they can take Rockstar North's crown as well.

'Hmmmmm, well of course there is a lot of action titles around at the moment, so how do we make it different, make it Edgy of course.'

But in all seriousness I think they've done a good job so far, but knowing EA, it won't last for long.

Only 1 game a year...huh...maybe you should make games with a bit more replayability

Dante's Inferno was a fun game, I have to admit. Sure it was a copy pasted God of War game that takes place in catholic Hades, but it was still fun and even though the QTEs were hard to figure out, I still liked it.

But the only way I would replay the game is to beat it on hard mode, that's it...

I hope their 2011 game has a lot more to reply this time.

But the fact that they have at least a year to make their new game means they have a lot of time to work on the game

"Edgy" is a word stupid people use to sound 20 years younger than they actually are. Just my $0.02...

As for any potential game, well, isn't there some proverb vis-a-vis the merit of deeds versus promises?

I just got Dead Space, and started playing it, it's quite fun, if a bit short. I'm at level six after three hours of play.

I would be happy if they could just release an action game that didn't go stale and mushy after 3 hours of playing time.

Visceral, continue making games where you stomp evil babies, just escaping lawsuits for killing kids I'd say.

Nothing was more refreshing after punting the babies in dead space after they just scared the hell out of you and latched to you driving their tentacles into your back.

I see a connection here between Dead Space and Dante's Inferno involving deformed babies. Freud would have his work cut out for him.

Oh hell, Freud would have a fucking field day with DI. I can just imagine his reaction...

Good for them, I've enjoyed both games and while I didn't love Dante's Inferno, I did love Dead Space.

And I also look forward to the MacBeth idea they supposedly have. Anyone who's read that know it's actually a REALLY damn good book.

And to see Visceral's spin on it? Oooooohhhhhh, that's would be such a literary nerdgasm for me I think I'd reserve a copy at the drop of a hat...

I'd be most interested in seeing how the gameplay would work though.

"The mission for this studio is nothing less than to be the leader of third-person linear action games"
Then perhaps releasing one the same year as God of War III wasn't such a good idea?

(Not meant as a stab at DI or a prop-up for GoW, I was just under the impression that God of War as a series was more popular than clothing to the Amish.)

Edit: Wait, the thing mentioned earlier wasn't a joke?

Oh, and welcome to the Escapist, ye with Metal Slime above me!
