Mikami Gives First Details on Futuristic Shooter Vanquish

The creator of Resident Evil has opened up the curtain on Vanquish [http://www.amazon.com/Vanquish-Playstation-3/dp/B003PHLT8W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279054426&sr=1-1], his next project with Platinum Games.

The first the world saw of Shinji Mikami's Vanquish was a trailer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97887-Resident-Evil-Creators-Next-Game-is-Vanquish] that, while using an intriguing mix of both CG and real-life actors, didn't really explain what the game was. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Mikami has revealed that Vanquish is indeed a shooter, as would be expected from the trailer, though he wants to differentiate it from the pack.

Vanquish is somewhat of a challenge for Mikami, going for a third-person shooter now in contrast to his action games of the past like Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe. Resident Evil had guns, but I doubt anyone would call that a shooter either. As for why Vanquish will be different from Gears of War or the multitudes of other gun games out there, Mikami says: "Making a normal shooter wouldn't be interesting, so it has the concept of the feeling of speed and good tempo, and something flashy." Vanquish could be the spiritual sequel to Mikami's P.N. 03, it seems.

Mikami is bringing his action game experience over to Vanquish, he believes. "It will be a shooter that places importance on the good tempo and feeling of rhythm you get from playing an action game." Boss battles may provide the experience of something like God of War, where the action is broken up into varied gameplay segments at times.

The main mechanic that could make Vanquish different is its "Boost" ability. Boosting will allow the player to slide around, closing a gap between an enemy to reach melee range, or quickly hiding behind obstacles. The gameplay is currently described as "move quickly, take out enemies, then hide." The player does not collect weapons, and instead his weapon will change shape depending on its use. There is also a bullet-time mechanic that involves close range attacks, which might be something a little different.

Lastly, Vanquish doesn't actually involve an alien attack, as the trailer made it appear. The game's story involves a standoff between Russia and the United States in the near future, so all of the robots and other technology shown are controlled by human hands.

These new details give Vanquish more potential than it had as a simple idea, as I like the idea of a character in a shooter that is more mobile. A small selection of new screens is available on Vanquish's website [http://platinumgames.com/2010/03/04/first-look-at-vanquish/].

As far as concepts go, I'm not impressed.

I'm sure the game will be decent though.

I too like the gameplay concept but... America vs Russia AGAIN? Honestly can't people think of anything else?

EDIT: The trailer is awsome, but I'm not too fond of the live action.

I hope this comes on 360, i may have a go!
PS3 and 360 I believe. Hope it is as fast paced as FPSs because every TPS I've played been slow, especially GoW.

Oooo good! I have to agree. I liked GoW, but it felt waaay to slow for me. I like fast paced action! With GoW it felt like i was controlling a brick.

I don't know about the story, but if it does the gameplay elements they are talking about and a good mood/theme, I am definitely interested

Cool concept, I like the idea of a gun just changing. Hopefully we have some control over that though. Imagine about to snipe someone, and his buddy moves into your range and your gun just morphs into a shotgun. Still, it would be nice to try an FPS with more mobility and speed. Hopefully I get it on PC...

So they're bringing variety to a gunfight by having the gun change shape according to how it's used. Sounds a lot like the way you can develop a multitude of skills using one and the same sword in a fantasy RPG. I like it!

Can't say anythings jumping out and striking me as something that's gonna make the game any more or less different from your average joe shooter.

Definetly. He seems to be taking the good elements from RE5 and giving them a makeover...well, they worked for that, cant see them not been transferable!

Is it just me or does it look like Halos masterchief painted white to play in a gears of war over the shoulder game?

At this point I'd probably rent it, but if it turns out anything like Halo I will be pissed.

Army of Two: 40th day had a cover slide ability.
I'm not seeing much at the moment to distinguish this from the rest of the flock; especially given Gears Of War 3 is just about to show itself.

Now that I know it's a third-person shooter and not first-person, I am a bit more intruiged to buy this one.

If he wants to put emphasis on movement, i'm all for it. Been waiting for something like that in light of all the clunky shooters of today. Hope it turns out well.
