2K Games Signs Playboy Deal for Mafia 2

Mafia 2 [http://www.2kgames.com/].

Awhile back, the local yammering Aussie Playboy [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/57-Painkiller] to add more than 50 vintage covers and Centerfolds to Mafia 2. The deal will add an extra dimension of realism and flavor to the game, which takes place in a "meticulously" replicated American city of the 1940s and 50, by allowing players to collect "virtual copies" of the iconic men's magazine.

"While most mob-inspired games' emphasis is solely on action, Mafia 2 features a deep and compelling narrative that is embellished with a sophisticated, era-evoking atmosphere," said 2K President Christoph Hartmann. "In partnering with Playboy, we are able to add a unique element of authenticity to the game by using vintage images from the magazine that illustrate the power of Playboy's influence on the attitudes and culture of that generation."

Playboy was launched in 1953 and grew to become the number-one "men's magazine" in the world, a title it still holds despite years of reduced circulation following its peak in the 1970s.

"Mafia 2 is set when Playboy first came into vogue and features characters whose style and attitudes mirror content from our early issues," added Jimmy Jellinek, editorial director at Playboy Magazine. "We're excited to bring an element of authenticity to the game that is unmatched in the men's publishing category."

Mafia 2 is currently in development at Mafia [http://www.2kczech.com/], and is scheduled for release later this year on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Damnit; now I have a reason to check out this game as a rental. 50's pin-ups are the best.

Its things like this that always make me excited for a game. Its always the little things that add those great touches to a game.

Of course, boobies always are a good thing too.

So it's a collect them all? Finding vintage tits is better than shooting pigeons I suppose. I wonder what the bonus' for doing so will be - other than pics of course.

No, see, the original post covers that.

On topic: That's pretty cool I suppose, the original Mafia was a wonderful game and I've been excited for the sequel ever since I saw a trailer for it... wow, that was a while ago.

My brother played that game so much he started to hallucinate vintage cars when he walked along actual roads, heh.

But the Playboy deal? I suppose that's really more an immersion thing than "buy our game to be titillated!" deal - especially when you consider you can already peruse Playboy's entire back catalog of magazines electronically for free (everyone did know that, right?).

Obviously it will sell well when they will say that a "Playing with one hand" mode will be included.

The world needs more games where you can work hard to find stuff you can find easily enough on Google.

Hmmmmm.... As long as there isn't any strangly futuristic Playboy billboards with "Buy me at Playboy.com" around the city I guess this is an okay addition.
Agreed. As long as it is kept in time with the game...otherwise *shudders* I dread to think

Still, this means it takes place in both the 40s and 50s, right?

That would be my interpretation, yes. The original Mafia took place over the span of several decades, so it wouldn't surprise me to see the setting change as the time period jumps further forward.

So long as Playboy centerfold pin-ups aren't adorning walls during the parts of the game set in the 40s, they won't be violating any rules of historical accuracy.

That's whay I'm worried about...Product placement in one half of the game, and not the other.

Wait, shouldn't Yahtzee be referred to as a Brit-Aussie? And how would we go about pronouncing that without it sounding funny?

Yeah. "Authenticity." That's why they're doing it. It has nothing to do with the fact that tits=sales. I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a bullet point on the back of the box.

Well that says plenty about men. Surely there are more interesting reads? The number one mens mag in the world? I prefer Fighters Only myself.
