Final Fantasy XIII Developers Would Like to Make Sequel

The director and producer of Final Fantasy XIII [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-XIII-Playstation-3/dp/B000FQ2DTA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278964269&sr=1-1] have expressed interest in making a sequel to the game, but admits the likelihood of that depends on sales.

Direct sequels are a rarity in the Final Fantasy series and most of the games are standalone titles with little relation to their predecessors, or their successors for that matter. But occasionally there is a game that bucks the trend, like Final Fantasy X-2 [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-X-2-Playstation-2/dp/B00008URUA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278969392&sr=1-1], and Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama, producer and director of FFXIII, are interested in going there again.

Speaking at a French launch event for FFXIII, Producer Yoshinori Kitase said: "In the past three years we worked both on the world and on the various systems. Creating these systems isn't very glamorous and can frankly be a bit boring. If we could do a XIII-2, we could direct all our attention to the story and refine what we have already built."

The pair admits, however, that the possibility of a sequel depends on how the game sells in the West, and that a more typical follow-up - a Final Fantasy XV - is also not guaranteed.

"We do not know if there will be a XV. This depends a lot on the success of XIII ... But if there is a XV, I hope the way we wrote our characters carries over. We strived to create believable people of flesh and blood. They are not robots. And they are not super heroes. I hope this humanity is something we will see again."

'No guarantee, depends on sales in the west.'
So we're guaranteed a sequal then it seems, considering Final Fantasy games sell like freshly baked awesome over here.

And there I was thinking Final Destination 3 was a slightly inappropriate name...

OT: Don't these games sell heaps everywhere?

It must be a pain coming up with characters over and over and over again.

So.....this means that FF13 ends on a possible cliff hanger? Or unresolved issues within the plot?
Oh brill, feeling quite sorry I read it now knowing I might be building up to this

Yeah, really.

It's a Final Fantasy game - it's going to sell.

Maybe, but then again, FFX gave no impression that a horrible sequal *cough*FFX-2*cough* would be made.

It was that false Japanese modesty thing again.
"We totally know we're making a sequal, but let's cover our arses and say we'll only do it if 13 sells well in the west. *looks at each other* HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Then they went back to having a gigantic money fight.

X-2 was horrible.
I liked the battle system - yet concur nonetheless.

True, but it has to sell enough to make a decent profit over the millions of dollars they must have spent on development.

I can understand SE wanting to make a sequel. Considering the amount of time it took to create new character models, environments, battle system, etc. they probably don't want to go through that again anytime soon. If XIII sells well - and it's pretty much guaranteed it will - they could then just concentrate on a new story for the sequel and not worry about making a multitude of new graphics. It's the reason that X-2 was made so quickly: everything was pretty much recycled from X, with the main exception of new character models.

Wait, they're actually bothering to claim that FFXV is not guaranteed? At this point you can pretty much be sure there's going to be Final Fantasy games going on to XXV at the very least!

I haven't played FFXIII yet, and I'm not going to for a LONG time. Until the price drops considerably, actually. It looks okay, but definitely not great enough to buy right off the kiln, you know? (Yeah, I'm one of those who hate linearity - don't tell me it makes things more cinematic, all I can see is a game so desperate for good graphics that it had to sacrifice huge portions of the Final Fantasy experience just to be made at all. Square Enix has been crippled by their own technology.) I'll still play it, and maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. But I'm not buying it full price. No way.

How about we stop talking about FFXIII-2 and get to working on that FFXII sequel, Fortress that you guys canceled last year?

This is true.

I would reallyl ike to see a sequel. The game is epic, and, if they could improve the game in terms of flexibility in a sequel it would be nice.

You have a huge world to explore after all!

Ever notice Square never makes games for the fanbases that want them?

FF7 Remake.
Parasite Eve.
A GOOD FFT sequel.

Well that would be because they are made of awesome. Except FFXII.

DON'T MAKE A SEQUEL!

You all saw what happened with FFX-2, it completely ruined the story of FFX and left us with a fucking happy ending. There should never be a happy ending for FFX.

Would be welcome.

I'm about 18 hours into FFXIII. Despite LOATHING the first 10 or so hours, the past few have really picked up the slack and made FFXIII interesting and fun. Definitely stick through with it - it gets better. I won't disagree that the first 5 to 6 chapters are absolute crap, but the rest are a steady improvement.

Apparently, one of the reasons why the first half of FFXIII sucked so badly was due to the fact that they spent so much time getting the graphics engine and the game play system right. I don't think that's the road they should have taken, and I definitely think FFXIII suffered because of it (to clarify, FFXIII is not a bad game by any means. It's just one of the worst FF game so far, but still manages to be good, at least, past the first 10 to 12 hours).

If they made a sequel it will allow them to focus purely on expanding the world, filling it with more variety and events and side-quests. Right now, FFXIII's world seems a bit.... bare bones. Half Empty. Sterile almost. Which doesn't endear it to me very much.

But a sequel could correct all that, and make FFXIII worth plaything through a second time.

I thought you said XIII would be the last one, why is there suddenly a XV?
We all know you're going to make this anyway, so why make this announcement?

Or of course, a much better idea:

Let this series die at last. It's ready, it's past ready, this thing isn't even breathing by itself anymore, it is hooked up to every life support machine available, it's time to let it go with as much dignity as it has left after FFX-2 and FFXII.
