Assuming that I actually get XBOX Live, the dragon is what I'd go for.

Well, since my Escapist Avatar is a flashing ninja monkey, I would want a Flashing Ninja Hamster.

We would roam the galaxy, searching for colorblind organisms we could pounce upon!

And then we would bend the space-time continuum to our will.

And that is the tale of how Hubilub and his pet hamster Blubihub conquered the galaxy!

Platypus, for the sheer surreality of that animal, its so wicked in its design its hard to pass on.

I wouldn't trust my avatar with the care of a pet. I don't think it would be a very responsible owner.

This of course not being helped by the fact that it is essentially a glorified stop sign.

My avatar is pretty prosaic character. I think he'd want some equally quiet fish. Knowing Ivan Maximov's fucked up imagination, the fish would probably have legs or some other grotesque, depressing deformity.

I already have a cat avatar, so I went with dragon. Because dragons are cool and breathe fire!! =D
