April 1: The Day Duke Nukem Forever Was Meant to Go Gold

No, this is not an April Fool's joke: Today was the day that the long-awaited Duke Nukem Forever [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Nukem_Forever] was scheduled to go gold.

It's April 1, also known as April Fool's Day, and for good reason: It's the day that people act silly, pull pranks and, more specific to the game industry, release all sorts of occasionally-funny press releases about new products that amuse readers and gone gold [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99626-April-Fools-2010-Roundup].

"MOMENT OF SILENCE PLEASE: By the 3DR/TTWO development schedule, April 1st, 2010 was supposed to be the day Duke Nukem Forever went gold," former Take-Two Producer Jason Bergman wrote on Twitter [http://twitter.com/loonyboi] earlier today, revealing what may be the greatest April Fool's joke that never was. "Totally intentional. It was going to be hilarious."

And hilarious it would have been, as gamers around the world struggled to figure out whether the announcement was real or just more chain-yanking from the most infamous piece of vaporware of all time. Unfortunately, as we all know by now, things didn't work out to be quite so funny: DNF went 3D Realms [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/91526-Updated-3D-Realms-Shutting-Down] that's still ongoing.

Too bad, really. That would've been a good one.

And thus a tear was shed against all who knew Duke, and thus, with a shot from the Take Two gun, he died.

Rest In Peace Duke.

Calumon: It's time to play hard and eat Guilmon Bread, but I'm all out of bread.

What does "Going gold" mean anyways?
Game finished for Release To Manufacture and Master (aka. RTM). Comes from the tradition of the master copy from which all other copies are made being a golden disc.

Wikipedia knows all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Going_gold#RTM

Oddly enough, I'm kind of glad it didn't. I mean, it's like one of the constants of the universe, like death and taxes. Saying DNF is coming out is like saying the sun is rising in the west tomorrow. I just don't know if I could process that. %-/

...

It's also strangely appropriate that "DNF" also stands for "Did Not Finish". (Yeah, I just noticed that. I'm a little slow.)

What exactly does "Go gold" mean? I hear the phrase thrown about a lot, but it holds no actual meaning to me.
